Hey guys I was looking to mount a scope to my .223 and was wondering what you guys though about cheaper scope rings. I'm not looking to pay a lot, but at the same time I'll pay just not get garbage.
In the past I've cheaped out on a utg magnifier and went through two that were defective before I just splurged on a $200 vortex. Which is the main reason I'm posting. At the moment I'm just planning on mounting a simmons scope but eventually am going to upgrade to much nicer one once I find a job relating to my newly acquired bachelors degree.

I've found cheap rings usually scratch my scope (Mexican Milletts for example). IME, decent rings are worth it.

If you MUST go super cheap, the $15 UTG rings work alright on my Dad's .17hmr. They are straight, and they didn't wreck the scope.

Don't go cheap. Just save up and get a decent set of rings when you can afford it.
IF you buy a cheap set you might as well just throw the money on the ground and walk away from it.
Cheap rings will give you cheap results.

With more expensive rings you are buying odds. These are not firm numbers, but my guess would be

80% of 20 dollar rings will lose zero, or mar up the scope.
5% of 50 dollar rings will lose zero, or mar up the scope.
1% of 100 dollar rings will lose zero, or mar up a scope.

As you can see the sweet spot is near the 50 dollar area, and inside of that you should be buying Warne Maxima rings. 90% of what I sell are Warne Maxima's and Im yet to hear a complaint out of the 100's Ive sold, and have yet to have a complaint in the 20ish Ive personally used. They are a pain to mount, but are very solid.

Thanks for all the comments. I wouldn't have guessed that scope rings would make that big of a difference as long as they were snug. I'll defiantly keep that in mind when ordering.

Anyone have any opinion on quick release scope mounts? I was leaning towards the quick release but don't know how practical they would be along with the added weight & cost. So now I'm having second thoughts. Plus their a bit pricey. :n00b:

Burris AR PEPR Tactical Riflescope Rings with Mount FREE S&H Burris Mounts Rings Bases
American Defense Recon-S 1" QD Picatinny Scope Mount

QD mounts are nice if you pay enough for good one's. With QD mounts you are paying for return to zero. The Burris PEPR will return within 5 moa, the American defense will return with in 1 moa.

If you are looking at the Burris PEPR take a look then at the SWFA SSALT. The same mount from what most people can tell, but for about $25 less. I agree with Alan though, don't be looking for a miracle QD mount at <$100

If you're looking at the PEPR, get the Leupold instead. Should be around the same price. Leupold (Warne) doesn't make a QD mount but IMO the Leupold is better built. Dead Nutz is also an option. I've used the PEPR before, and after a while I'm just not a fan.

If you're looking at a QD mount, I've had good luck with my American Defense. I have a LaRue on an ACOG and haven't tried it out though

Glad we could help. I sell the same rings, only mine are cheaper.

Well you missed out on selling me a vortex magnifier earlier this year, so to make it up to you I canceled my order...

Now how do I give you my money so I can get my rings!
