Yeah if you're refueling from a USAF tanker you don't play by plebian transponder rules.

I say it might be a BDA after the explosions because doing this by air just doesn't make much sense to me, not when all flights are tracked as public record like this. I don't know exactly what kind of air-dropped ordnance would be suitable for busting open a concrete-encased pipeline, and even though it's 70 meters down and probably won't get examined in detail, any bomb/torpedo/depth charge/etc will leave identifiable pieces behind.

A submarine, a dive team, and simple explosive charges seems like the best option IMO.

Or the Russians could just send charges down the pipe on a PIG

Imagine for a moment that we had flight data that an unmarked plane had loitered the area near deep water horizon while a Russian helicopter launched from Cuba loitered 250 km away.

Would we expect an explanation from the Russians? Would the war drums be beating here on this very forum???
Why would you trust what a suspect says?

Slightly related how fast can a plane be traveling and a halo or haho jump be done? That plane slowed to around 300 knots during the loop over the blast area
why would you do a jump.. into the water.. for a dive. That has to be the worst way of accomplishing that.
plus, if it was halo, they wouldn't have been tracked on radar anyway. That why halo is done, to avoid radar.

    Or just.... turn it off.

Which is a lot easier than blowing up your own pipeline, and potentially provoking the world to invade you when you've taken painstaking efforts to avoid article 5.

It's getting to the point that if you don't submit to the most insane conspiracy theories people want to call you a russian spy and purity spiral the whole situation until you lose any and all valuable insight into the situation. This is how you cause a collapse in intelligence and lose the fight.

Yup. The whole point of taking a hostage is undone if you shoot the hostage. No reason for Russia to do this at all.

When the claim is made that the US and EU in this matter are aligned and both are in cahoots to frame the Russians for the Nord Stream 1 and 2 sabotage (as it almost inevitably will be to explain this away), will that be an 'insane conspiracy theory' or seem plausible to you because of your own biases?

There is no more rationale for the EU to worsen its own energy crisis than there is for the US to commit an act of war against a nuclear power in order to further some shadowy political conspiracy

Edit: The time to just 'shut it off' would be before Germany ever became over reliant on it. If only some US president had warned them that Russia was an unreliable partner to mortgage their energy future to. Oy!
