I just picked up a used Ruger American .45 It came with 4 mags and was priced right. When I got it home I noticed the slide would not lock back on an empty mag. Am I missing something here? I can be pretty dense sometimes. How would one fix this situation? Not a total deal killer but an annoyance for sure.

Does it happen with all 4 magazines or just one?

Also, when I apply pressure to the bottom of the mag it locks back. It's like it's not pushing up enough to actuate the catch. Maybe a thorough cleaning? This just bugs the crap out of me.

I have heard that the stiffer springs from an S&W, M&P.45 magazines will drop in and cure the problem. I do not have personal experience, just hearsay.

That was reported in one of the threads I posted, but 1 (small sample size) person said it only worked on like 1 out of 4 of his mags.

And I did look for reviews and such before I bought this. I didn't see anything like this. (until now. LOL)
Well, it would be an issue you'd probably have to look for specifically when searching, which would have meant knowing it. I wasn't aware of it until I searched specifically for it.

Call one of Brownell's technicians and see if they stock a +10% magazine spring? Might be a b!tch to load but you will know you have the slide hold back actuated.

Won't do any good if the follower is already flush at the top of the mag. He said if he pushes up on the mag it'll catch. Sound like to me the mag sits a tad too low. The hole in the side of the mag for the mag release catch is probably machined too high.

Worth a try. Maybe he can contact Wolff Springs and see if they can make some since no one seems to be.
Or keep getting new ones from Ruger and maybe they will get some stronger springs for it eventually.

Yep. I think this is the issue.
