I have a Charles Daly 50cal that looks good but not sure how good the rifling is.It starts out loading like a normal muzzle loader but then the bullet slides down very easy. On my other muzzle loaders you need to push it down all the way till it seat with a little force. It fires fine but have not shot it enough to know if it is accurate. I was a little concerned about how easy it loaded, so I was wondering if it could be relined and where, or replace the barrel. Any info is appreciated.

    1. replace barrel is about the only option thats cost effective.

    2. shoot it first... it could be the way your barrel is and could be absolutly NOTHING wrong with it... w/out shooting you will never know

I have had muzzle loaders act like this. I always imagined what was happening in the first few inches of the barrel was the rifling was cutting in to the patch/ball/bullet/sabot. Then after the rifling is cut in well, it is easier to push the rest of the way down.

I don't know that is true, but that's what I always assumed was happening. I have a CVA inline and a Lyman sidelock that both behave like that.

I agree with IGW - if the thing shoots well, that is the real test.

My NEF sidekick was like this as well. Infact for the first 20 or so rounds it was damn near impossible to load. Now after mucho bore butter, it is a great loading gun. Once that barrel starts to season, it gets easier. At least that is how I understood it.
