I was traveling in Merriville(sp) on the 440 linked repeater system a few years back and I was able to talk to people in Bloomington. By extension, I would have been able to talk to a friend in Williams from where I was at, as the system runs all the way down to Huron. I was mobile and on med power, maybe 25 watts.

With my Vx-170 and the stock Ant. I can hit a repeater about 20 miles away while in my basement. Just wondering range changes would occur if I mounted a good ant. on my roof. By good I mean the best under $150.

It's relative to your terrain.

I live in a valley, with a VX-170 and a j-pole at about 20 feet I can
hit inside the counties touching mine that aren't blocked by the horizon.

I'm not confident that adding wattage would be any better than raising the antenna in my situation.

From my basement I can only hit the repeaters within 4-5 miles.

Topo maps are great for researching elevations and finding obstacles.

Sweet, now program the Ft Wayne repeaters in, the Huntington, Auburn and and surrounding ones. Label them with text

There are nightly nets at 6:30 on 146.880 I think.

Or if you want to stop by my office I can load all the freq, I have the cable and software.

Heres a good radio!

940 HF SSB Portable Transceiver (Military Version) The Barrett 940 is a lightweight, robust, portable HF transceiver package designed for use in severe field conditions with limited power supplies.
940 with ATU and whip antenna

LOL, well I did pretty good on the tech and general practice tests and I may take the real exam someday - along with maybe getting one of those
IC-7000 radios.
