Question on Rumor in Fort Wayne and registration

I heard a rumor that the Ft.Wayne Police department personnel are going to have to register their personal firearms, including long guns. At first I thought it could not happen because state law trumps local law with long guns. This would supposedly be a condition of employment.

I have no connections to verify this, and I do not give it much credence because the NRA would be all over it. I did get some feedback 2nd hand and it was said only if it is used on duty. Has anyone else heard of this?

Even with handguns it would be a huge issue but long guns also?

Good! Then it is probably nothing more than 2nd hand information that is faulty. I knew I could get an answer here.

Register firearms used on duty? That's called qualification, I bet.. you have to prove that you can hit what you need to hit before you're allowed to carry it..

The Long guns was the big question for me, officers do not usually use personal long gun firearms on duty. The way it was phrased was "personal guns including long guns"

The Sheriff's Department here gives the option for long guns - either qualify and carry the department's shotgun, or qualify and carry your own. I don't know what the rules are for person long guns, if you can only use shotguns or if carbines/AR/etc are okay, but I'd bet that would vary depending on department..
