If it recognizes the HD right click on the icon, (not a shortcut icon) and click on
    "Troubleshoot Compatibility"
Then use the recommended settings. If the HD ran on Vista it should run on Win 7 also. :)
I have several older Maxtor external HD's that needed to run in VISTA, or XP compatibilityy mode. The nice thing about Win 7 is that it figures out which settings are best and applies them.

It's not recognizing the HD at ALL. Not anywhere. The light on the HD is on, so I know it works. But for some reason it will not recognize it.

Sorry Rm,. I don't have any advice on how to fix it. But I have felt like this guy more than once. YouTube - Old computer gets thrashed by sledge hammer

    Good Luck!
If I didn't want what was on the HD as bad as I do...THAT WOULD ME ME and my computer. Minus the Sledghammer, Plus a 1911.

Is the HD plugged into the computer directly or are you using an USB hub?
I've had hubs fail to relay from powered devices before.
