The poor guy will be rotting in a prison for 7 years carrying firearms, which were locked inside a case in his car, when there are some drug dealers, rapists, and murderers serving less time than that.

Where is the justice in that?

If the law is wrong, it has to be corrected. The law is written to protect the public and keep the society in order, definately not to be abused in the manner it was used to imprison this NJ man.

Even a 10 year old child can see clearly that it is wrong to put a man in prison for 7 years for carrying lawfully acquired firearms inside locked case without any intention of causing bodily harms to himself or others.

There's currently a campaign on to write to Gov. Christie to try and get him to pardon Brian. So far the governor has done nothing (he's likely an anti-gun republicrat), but there's always hope that he'll see the light of day. There's also contact info for Brian, too. I'm sure he'd like to know that there are people out here that have his interests in mind. He's just one of many 2nd Amendment political prisoners we've had, and have, in this country.

Yeah, but he didn't reappoint him because he let a cop go on a bestiality rap. Not Brian's case. Either way, tho, the people of NJ are better of without that guy on the bench.

Just in via Facebook. Governor Christie commuted Brian's sentence. It's too bad he didn't pardon him, but this will do, for now.

It's official---Governor Christie has commuted Brian's sentence and he will be home before Christmas!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU everybody. If it wasn't for your letters, phone calls and support this never would have happened. What a joyous Christmas this will be. Thank again from the bottom of our hearts. Brian Aitken has been freed!

Good. The system works. Sometimes not exactly the way we want, or the speed we want. But it's good he's headed home for Christmas.

Even though Brian is going to be free, the fight is far from over. His lawyer is still pursuing the appeal and wants his rights restored in full. He even thinks there's a good chance it could happen. Of course, if Christie had had any courage on gun rights the point would be moot.

Do you recognize political realities at all? Or under your standards must every politician fall on his sword rather than compromise on anything?

So Christie is just another sellout? Do you not see that your standards are impossible in the real world of politics?

No, I don't see courage as inseparable from politics. He had the option to pardon him and restore his rights. He took the cowards way out and commuted his sentence. Christie doesn't seem to have a problem imposing his "principles" on NJ's medical marijuana laws, by sabotaging them and making it near to impossible to implement because he sees himself as a big republicrat drug warrior. Is he a sellout? Yep. But, that's just par for the course with most republicrats.

Agreed. Political cowardice. A full pardon was/is in order. I e-mailed him and told him as much.

Would a pardon set precedence so future cases could not be tried? Or would it be up to each Gov to pardon the individual? I don't really know. But I'm thinking that now it still has to go through the courts it's more likely to make it easier for everyone when they win and expunge his record.

    ^^This^^

In the land of unicorns, you can live the utopian life. Out here in the real world, you have a Republican governor of one of the bluest states in the nation. His political life expectancy is measured in months, not terms. He's got a lot bigger fights than over some guy with illegal magazines.

The fact that he granted clemency is kind of amazing, but of course it's never enough for the dedicated and unbridled anarchist. I guess he should have single handedly struck down New Jersey's law. Oh wait, he can't. And why exactly do we care about NJ laws that dont affect us in Indiana anyway?

Guess even Christmas can't make some people happy.
