NATO AWAC spotted In Grissom AFB

well, if you drive up state road 31 and have some Binos, you can see a NATO labeled AWAC sitting on the tarmac. Curious why a NATO plane would be there for "routine Maintenance" in the middle of Indiana, much less the middle of the USA...

They sure do have a fancy paint job on that aircraft. It's a long way from Geilenkirchen, Germany too. NATO has Radar feeds to NORAD, I wouldn't spin up too many conspiracy theories. Not over 5 or 6 anyway.

Maybe because the US is a member nation of NATO? And it's very probably a USAF plane which is detailed to NATO.

The German Air force AKA Luftwaffe has been stationed at Holloman AFB New Mexico with a flying training mission since 1956. There also was a presence of German AF at FT Bliss TX up until this year when those units consolidated at Holloman AFB NM. They fly both the F 4 Phantom as well as currently the Tornado; Nothing really new about it.

Lessee, Grissom Air Reserve Base houses KC-135 tankers - Boeing 707s; the pictured NATO AWACS aircraft appears to be the E-3 model; also a Boeing 707. "Scheduled maintenance" could be euphemistic for "engine failure/engine change."
