I was outside with the camera, because I saw hundreds of flying insects that looked like some kind of giant bee. They were about 25mm long and swarming on my trees out back.
When I got closer though, I could see that they were beetles of some kind.
Turns out they are cicada parasite beetles, and they were engaged in the universally recognized activity.
It was interesting, they all showed up and took care of business in a couple of hours. Never seen them before, haven't seen them since.
I have two of them in a terrarium, along with a praying mantis and some cricket frogs. Last week, they spent several days doing the deed and then one ate the other. Even the praying mantis doesn't screw with them.
