GARY -- A local man died after being shot in the head Monday night, according to officials.
Dennis Dearner, 50, was at an apartment in the Westbrook Apartment Complex, on Waverly Drive west of Taft Street, around 9 p.m. Monday when an unidentified man with a gun forced his way inside, Gary Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
The two then got into a struggle and two shots were fired, one of them striking Dearner, King said.
Dearner, of 601 Tyler St., was taken to the Methodist Hospitals in Gary, where he was pronounced dead at 2:16 a.m., Jeff Wells, Lake County deputy coroner, said.
Dearner died from a gunshot wound to the head, and his death has been ruled a homicide, Wells said.
King said officials do not know if the suspect was known to Dearner and no description is available.
King said she does not know if anyone else was in the apartment at the time of the shooting.
"The detectives have gotten a few leads, but again as always we need the public's help," King said.
Anyone with information or who might have seen anyone in the area should may Detective Christopher Rodriguez at 881-4738.
