Brand new to me Springfield M1. (just arrived yesterday) I found that I cannot activate the safety no matter what I do.

Thanks to some input from INGOers, I remove the trigger group and was able to finally get the safety to engage. But only by pressing down firmly on the hammer, moving it well away from the trigger catch. And the movement is not insignificant.

Time to Call CMP or something that can be fixed by me? It appears to be more than a simple lube it to make it work.

    At rest. No go:

I’d get Jerry Kuhnhausen’s books. They explain everything you ever wanted to know about the Garand.

    and the 1911.

    and the Mauser.

Have you completely disassembled the rifle, cleaned and properly greased it as suggested by CMP? If not you need to do so. Its not unusual for this to happen on a dry ungreased garand
