Kahr CW9 and CM9's are VERY good guns for the money. Difficult to beat in terms of value and reliability. The only gun that beats it is the Shield IMO.
Springfield Armory XD Subcompact:
6.25" long, 1.2" wide, 4.75" tall

Solid feeling gun and a good shooter with a crisp trigger break.
Beretta Px4 Storm subcompact
6.2" long, 1.4" wide (a little bit fat), 4.8" tall
Available in 9mm and 40cal
Very blocky, secure grip. Soft, smooth trigger with a minor trigger break.
Glock 26/27
6.3" long, 1.2" wide, 4.2" tall
Available in 9mm (26) and 40cal (27)
Great gun. Probably comfortable for smaller hands... not for me. Smooth trigger with no tightening, trigger break, or other sign it's about to fire.
I've had a couple of Kahrs, a Nano, a PPS, and a PF9. I still own only the PPS, I sold the Nano to a buddy, and the others are long gone. The Kahrs are OK, just don't seem to be built as well, but mine were reliable (K9 and PM40). I never fired the PF, as it was just not comfortable at all in my hand. The Nano was well built, and I would have kept it if I didn't already have my PPS. The PPS isn't the smallest or lightest, but it's a pleasure to shoot and carry, and is built well.
I haven't tried the shield or xds, although the xds looks interesting. I think the decision to put a non removable safety on the shield was a bad call, especially since most M&Ps don't have one. I may have dropped my PPS if it wasn't for that decision. However, the Walther is an excellent pistol that o recommend fully. Lots of choices in this class, good luck with your decision.
My dad bought the Taurus 709 Slim. He was wanting something smaller to carry and it has been a pretty good fit (single stack 9, like 7 shots, i think).
Only negative that I saw was the trigger. It pulls every bit as far as my 24/7 but gets unusually heavy at the very end... it's like it might not even pop. Then it does. Maybe they're not all like that. Would definitely check it out though.
OK. well op (marinemom) guess you got what you asked for. 3 pages of all the small guns on the market, since there are so many different models made, they all have supporters. My suggestion is too try as many as you can and define your price-point. I would drop out the lower end ones as less reliable ( in my opinion). If your budget allows then by all means go to the higher end. Good luck in your search and thanks for your service. ex- navy amphib sailor. aka "your ride"
