Well this is coming out of left field, but i do enjoy milsurps and I have decided to buy a swiss k31

7.5 Swiss seems to pretty much split the difference between .308 and .30-06
I’ve got 4 of them that I would consider selling but I’m up in the VA hospital awaiting heart bypass surgery in the morning!!

Looked at the Cabelas version of Weatherby Vanguard.
    Thinking one in .257 mag.
Like I need another deer rifle, heck I didn't fire a shot from mine this past deer season.

But it'd be "better" at long range than my like new .30-06.

Subjectively, it leans more toward -06.

Think really hard before you screw around with trying to better GP11 for target use. It's not as easy as it might seem, for "ball" ammo. But BUY when you can buy some.

If you hunt with it, that is a different story.

Oh, and consider the 1911 instead of the K31. Longer sight radius. Freije's auction has one coming up for sale...I told them it wasn't a K31, but they haven't looked at their email.

    Sorry to necropost but

lol my father in law solved this question for me. I got a savage axis in 6.5 creedmoor for christmas so that should be a fine gun for what i need.

    Here is the next question.

What glass and scope rings should I get.

I'm looking for something that is 2.5-10x or 3-9x with an illuminated reticle and some kind of BDC and one that has good clarity/low light performance

And I'm looking to spend $300 a max of 500 on a scope

Save your money, and spend a little more. Be patient and wait on a refurb sale at A&A

I have looked at this one as an option for a 7.62x51

Here's a 1-8 illuminated... pretty good deal at $300 for the scope and mount...

6.5 Creedmoor is a fine caliber for you use.

I use a Vortex Viper 4-16x44 scope with a 30mm tube on my Remington 700 in 308 for deer. The longest shot I've taken was for my biggest buck a couple years ago, 226 yards and dropped him in his tracks. If you only shoot in good daylight pretty much any scope will be fine but it's the last 10 minutes of legal shooting light after sunset on that big buck when you need that really good glass.

One doesnt need high mag to make good shots out to a couple hundred yards.

Also, exit pupil. If a high mag variable scope is dim at last light, dial it down.

More deer proly escape from high mag and being close LOL.

Not everybody is counting inches of antler on a chunk of ag from a tripod.

High mag also shows your wobble more, which can add to it.

While my .308 wears a 3-9x Id be happier if it had a 2-7x. Gloss scopes are kinda hard to come by these days.

This might be something you would want

If i could have the absolute ideal for deer hunting i would have an AR with a 3-12 for daylight shooting then have an upper with an ACOG for dusk.

I found an Athlon 3-12 scope on sale with an illuminated reticle and realistically with a point blank range of 250 yards with the lighter barnes copper bullets i like to use 95% of any deer i shoot will probably be on 3x inside of 250

The higher magnification is probably going to exclusively be used in a tree stand shooting over a cornfield. I may or may not sit up in my stand the weekend before opening day and make a range card lol
