Only thing I can think of, did he open the door or did he shoot through the door when closed with no entry gained to the vehicle.
I'm also interested in what the teens did/said, if anything, when they got to what they thought was their car... and found someone in it.

ETA: If indeed this all arose from mistaking this man's car for their friend's, then the outcome is tragic for all involved, regardless of whether it is determined reasonable or not.

Current (as on TV) reports are one thing, reality many time is another. Currently it is reported that the shooter exited the vehicle and continued shooting at the person fleeing. That in itself should land the shooter in court. The original shooting from inside the car could be stretched to self defense as he probably thought that someone was trying to steal the car. Once outside the car and what seemed like attempted theft was over, he should have holstered his firearm and waited for police.
Almost anytime you shoot someone in the back in Indiana, they’re going to call it unnecessary force. When they turn their back and flee, no matter whether they’re armed or not, the law sees them as no longer an “active threat”. There was a case around 4 years ago in Brownsburg where a criminal broke in a boys house as he was home alone and while fleeing through the front door, the boy used his dads gun to shoot the intruder in the back. The court said it was unnecessary force, as the perpetrator was trying to “leave the scene”.
