Is a typical AR15 scope mount too high for a FAL?

    I'm not an optics guy.

I bought an AR15 and like it more than I thought I would. I'm tempted to buy a Sig Tango MSR 1-6x24 scope (with mount) for the AR, but would also like to mount it on a FAL (picatinny top cover) temporarily to see how accurate the FAL is at 100 yards.

I don't want to buy additional lower rings because Sig-on-FAL will be temporary. Do you think shooting without benefit of a raised cheek weld matched to the tall AR mount will give accurate results?

Yes. I put med rings on one with a 40mm obj and it was just right.
I'm sure those medium-height rings worked well, but the Sig Tango comes with a good mount at typical (tall) AR height. I want use that on the FAL if it'll work for my limited purposes.

The only scoped rifles I own were passed down to me from my Dad. They're set up for proper cheek weld and are a pleasure to shoot. I don't have experience shooting with a scope mounted too high, so I'm hoping you guys can advise me.

That will put it awful high. The other problem would be having the clearance to adjust the power ring. You may as well try it but I would still go with rings that would put it lower. It's got a little different impulse than an AR and not having a good cheek weld may have negative consequences.

Good points. If I mount this, or any scope permanently to a FAL I'll get a decent set of medium rings. I haven't done that already because the rear peep sight is probably going to be in the way.

My experience with FAL is that the recoil impulse is surprisingly tame. Kind of a PUSH rather than a jolt. I think the AR mount will result in sort of a "chin weld" but am hoping that'll be okay for just sighting in from a bench at 100 yards.
