The problem is, in suburbia, no home is truly a fortress against a mob of *******s. Ordinary homes can catch fire if anyone down the block is set and condos/apartments are even worse. Fire destroys everything if the rioters are a sshole enough and most usually don't care about setting things on fire.

If...and I said IF the situation is without rule of law. If no help is coming and it is truly chaos...one might be incline to start taking out the pyros of the group before they start lighting things on fire. These people mob together with nothing but blunt objects, fire and anger. Perhaps a few might have a gun, but the reason why they mob together is that they are individually cowards who will scatter like rats at the first sign of real resistance.

The best way to handle a mob is to avoid it but if they are coming for you and you have no choice. It is your life vs theirs...and one might not be incline to go down without taking as many of them out as possible or the only way left is to fight through them and keep on running.
