    They were a very nice couple. They had many yard sales, and the wife made delicious homeade pies. In fact, Dad had an old trailer for sale and the husband wanted it, so Dad traded him straight up for one of her pies! What makes it ever more tragic is that their grown children and grandchildren live directly across the street, and they have other family that lives nearby.

    Quoted from today's HeraldTimes;
    Dude Voland collected, bought and sold guns; police have not said if any were taken during the break-in at his house. The avid gunsman, an expert marksman and 50-year National Rifle Association member, died after one for the intruders fired a bullet into his head.
    His funeral is set for Tuesday at Unity Baptist Church. Memorial donations in memory of the World War II veteran will be donated to Cottonwood Christian Church or the NRA.

    I am very sorry for those of you who knew and loved the victims and their family.

    I wish "wake-up calls" didn't so often result from tragedy and senseless loss of life. All the more reason for the rest of us to "harden up" as much as we can with respect to personal safety. We can't remain "on guard" all the time without it having a significantly negative impact on our lives, but for those situations when we are relaxed (like at home where you should be relaxed!), it's all the more important to plan ahead so you won't have as much trouble reacting as quickly as possible.

    We've seen some excellent suggestions and examples here. We've seen some evidence that some people are changing their thinking on on home security. Everyone reading this who is reminded to review their own security situation or to do so for the first time is a win for all of us. When we spread it to people who don't read here, even if it's just simple awareness, then we've won some more.

    Unfortunately a lot of people get too comfortable in their homes. We are all guilty of it. However, unlike most life threatening situations you face out on the street, you should be able to prepare for most situations that may take place in your own home. After all, it is YOUR turf, and you know it best. Planning, preparation, and training are key elements in home defense. You are going to have to defend yourself because you cannot count on LE getting there to save you and your family! When seconds count, LE is just minutes away.

    You are most likely to encounter an intruder between the hours of 9am and 6pm. Every time you come home you should assume that your home has been invaded until you clear your home. That does not mean you need to have your gun drawn, but on your person with your hand on the gun.

    We feel that dogs are still the best system to have. People forget to turn alarms on, and burglars know that! And, if your power goes off, then what? Audible systems that let the intruder know their presence is revealed is a good thing. If they can hear it, so can others in and outside of the home.

    Where is your gun RIGHT NOW? What is your plan? Can your family or any single family member perform the plan without you there?

    There are three basic situations that you need to prepare for.

    • What are you going to do if you come home and there are no signs of obvious intrusion and you enter the home and find yourself face-to-face with an attacker?
    • What are you going to do if you come home and there are obvious signs of intrusion and you know a loved one is in there and you need to take action?
    • What are you going to do if your home is invaded in the afternoon or night time while you are there?
