Any of the Garmins like the 64ST work great.
Learn how to use the GPS before heading into the great unknown and take a map.

Oh and read up on the Missing 411 books!

Just FYI, over the weekend at Cabela’s in their bargain cave they had a Harmon 60csx. Was a couple hundred off origin price. If you’re not familiar with them they are HIGHLY regarded. I’m still using the one I bought almost 15 years ago. As I recall it was around 250 but in the electronics world it’s one that actually will still be relevant 15 years from now. Good luck

I have hiked the Grand Staircase National Monument in Utah extensively. Trails are not marked as the majority of the area is desert sand or solid rock. Rock cairns are about it. I've done it using a National Geographic trails illustrated map (like a quad map on steroids), a good compass, google maps on my phone and the All Trails app. Youi'd be surprised how much cell coverage there is in the area. Did the same in Northern Arizona. GPS can't hurt, but it's not totally necessary if you understand how to use a good map and compass. GPS and other electronic devices are a nice crutch.
