I know the shipping of firearms has been discussed ad nauseum here. I have a slightly different question.

If a non-licensee uses an FFL to send a gun back to the mfg. or to a smith for work, (say, a handgun, because FFL can use USPS, saves shipping $), can the mfg or smith send the gun back to the customer, like they could if the customer shipped it directly, or does it have to go back to the FFL who shipped it on the customer's behalf?

Also, if you use an FFL to ship out a gun for repair and it comes back to them, do you have to execute a 4473? NICS?

I am NOT an expert (a.k.a. consult a lawyer... yadda yadda yadda)
In response to the last couple questions, I believe that a 4473 and NICS is only needed when making a new sale/moving a serial #, so I don't think those steps would have to happen. Again, not sure, but I think I've heard it this way before.
It'll be interesting to see what others say.

I'm pretty sure if you consign a gun and decide you want it back before it sells, then they have to do the 4473. I know it doesn't answer your question, but may help.
