Senate OKs $1T budget bill, payroll tax cut - Yahoo! News

Since Congress for the "who know how many, too many to count" time failed to pass a budget for 2012 (they did not pass one for FY2011, we are now in FY2012 with no budget and they should be working on the FY2013 on but are not) they instead opted to pass a 2 month continuing resolution (CR). (ie. We will find gov at the same level as the last budget (ie. the FY2010 one).

So this "saves face" fort all of them, they can go back home for the holiday and worry about this issue in feb 2012. Yup kick the can a little more.

I'll be the farm that in FEB they will once again kick the can and not pass a budget and pass another CR to avoid yet another shut down.

Wonder how long we can go on CRs before the world/markets finally figure it out that we are broke, they won't lend to us, and they know/see that we have been printing money of of thin air.

PREP boys & girls & PREP NOW!!!! The Europe and the US are heading for a major train wreck and it does not matter who is in office in 2012 it's far too late now.

I really wish they would go ahead and shut the government down. All that means is, as they say, unnecessary federal workers would stay home and only essential work would continue.

Gee, there is the savings right there, admitting that there are hundreds of thousands of "non-essential" workers!!! What a great way to start cutting government is to tell those "non-essential workers" that they are no longer needed, and look at the savings as a start in getting spending under control!

Well, except for the riots and destruction such a sudden change would cause...those cost money and would offset our gains a bit.

Problem is gov could run a little while like this before "level of service" would go down. The non-essentials are what commercial biz call "overhead" (payroll, maintenance, supply clerks, etc...)

For example take a SSA field office. The claims rep would continue to work during a gov shut down but not the support staff. Sooner or later that claim reps is going to run out of toner for the fax machine. Then what? Who buys the toner? Who installs it? Or what if they have network/PC issues? Who fixes that? How does that rep get paid? (time keeping wise). Who ensures the bldg temp is right, changes the filter on the AC/furance, the light bulbs, etc.

It's all those behind the scene things. However even if you send them all home (.gov workers) it's still nothing. The big budget items are SS and MEDICARE of which no one is going to touch.

Best example I can give you is you ate 6 months behind on your home payment of $1200 per month & you are going to cut your $.50 morning coffee to "save" some money to pay off your 6 months of home late payments. YUP THAT'S GONNA WORK.

It looks to me like they've figured out how to spend however much they want without ever having to actually have a budget to answer for. If everything's always an emergency, who's going to argue?

The feds have been encroaching upon grounds well beyond the boundaries established by the States in the Constitution for far too long.

    SHUT IT DOWN!

Frankly, I would like to see States assert their rights documented in the Tenth.

    Enough is enough.

Government shutdowns are extremely unpopular. The Republicans always get the blame for a government shutdown, so it's a political loser for them. Even their constituents who scream for them to be fiscally responsible blame them when the government shuts down or gets close to shutting down. Nothing like cutting off the slop to get the hogs squealing.

Expecting politicians to ignore what's popular is like asking the sun not to rise.

I've been through a government shutdown.
I was working at the Veteran's Administration when Clinton was president. Nothing much happened; some federal parks closed, that kind of stuff.

The Republican controlled House of Representatives HAS passed budgets. Whenever a budget bill that doesn't include big Income Tax rate increases gets to the Senate, Harry Reid declares it "Dead on Arrival." Then, the Animal Farm Media bleats, "Republicans, party of NO! Republicans, party of NO"
And most of the stupid people believe them. :dunno:

This batch of politico's are masters of the manufactured crisis. By always screaming,"The sky will fall if you don't let us do what we want!!!" they effectively railroad any attempt to derail their plans. The Tea Party freshman have been a huge disappointment. Proving to be every bit as corrupt as who they replaced. The more things change, the more they stay the same. I've basically stopped hoping anything will change. Everyone the Washington, no matter if they been there a minute or 20 years want the very same thing, more power. No money will be cut to any meaningful degree, ever. The Super Congress had all the power in the world to cut spending and still couldn't bring themselves to cut one dime. This is the way it will go, more and more spending. More and more war to open new markets to bleed dry. On and on and on till the whole thing implodes. Did we learn anything the collapse, nope. Just dusted our collective selves off and kept going at warp speed.

    Nothening ever changes, ever!

You're very close to the core of the truth, here.

The same thing happened in '94 when we elected a whole bunch of conservative newcomers to Congress.

Ask yourself why they almost all turn into the kind of politicians we say we despise. Don't accept the easy answer.

If the system corrupts almost everyone, including our founding fathers, then what should change, our system, or our perception of corruption?

If you have a system that is better than any other system that has ever worked, but all it produces is corruption, what does that mean?

One of my favorite analogies is of a baseball team. All the batters are batting .333. A guy who doesn't understand baseball buys the team, looks at the batting averages, and hits the roof. "We have to do something about this!" he says. "Our batters fail almost 70 percent of the time! We have to fix this! We should at least get everyone up near 50 percent by next year, right?"

So, everyone we send to Washington gets corrupted, even the ones who seem the most idealistic? Things that make you go, Hmmmm.

On paper (the Constitution), we have far and away the best government on earth. It's when we give men power over other men, and the power to dispense goods and services at the expense of "others" is when we allow the "system" to be corrupted.

Yes. Ours started getting corrupted immediately.

The issue with the NG being there if the gvt shuts down does not fly. Most of the full time guard workforce are civil service workers. If the gvt shuts down they are furloughed just like the rest of the non essential personnel.
