    These people would not have been deterred with the threat of a death sentence hanging over them.
    They're driven by far more nefarious forces, that would never have any concern about death.

    Well, it might possibly deter some of them. But the ones caught, tried and sentenced can be guaranteed not to be repeat offenders.

    Saw another method in a movie where the Vikings would tie the person to be executed to a pole and let the crabs eat them when the tide came in.

    A man's fiancee is killed.
    The man tracks him down, and beats him. And puts a tracker in him.
    So that he can periodically find him, and beat him more.
    What's wrong with gut-shot with a 45-70 at 75 yards and left to die slowly?
