I carry three or four cheap bic lighters throughout my gear and a pack of waterproof matches (with striker) in a waterproof match case. I also carry several little pieces of the cheapo fire starter sticks that appear to be wood shavings in some kind of flammable wax.

I currently have a fero magnesium stick in my bag, but I have never needed it, it's just more junk to carry around.

Sometimes you use fire to save your life, like when you are wet and it is cold. Hard to beat a triox bar and some form of spark. You collect as much tinder, kindling and wood as you can and light it up. This is not about skills or gear it is about using that 15 minutes you have.

Also, the fire is useless if you are wearing cotton. If you have synthetic clothing and a small synthetic towel you are in good shape. I would want the towel over the laser.

The better your skills are the less crap you will carry. I used my fire kit last weekend while visiting our property in Indiana. I needed to make a lot of crap disappear and keep working, went to the truck, grabbed my kit, fire in minutes. Set your gear up right and use it year round so you know it.

It is good to know all the tricks but you don't need to carry them on you if you have confidence in your skills and gear.
