Saw this post on FB. I can believe the DNR would like to do away with landowner exemption, but I'm not buying the claim that 51% of hunters use it.

"The DNR is looking at doing away with the Landowner Exemption and charging a small fee. They say they do not get any funding from them nor do they get any federal match in funding. They have come to the point where they are exhuasting ways to generate funds for the department and are spending more than they are taking in. It is said that 51% of the hunters claim the landowner exemption, so they see that as a way to help bail them out of the whole they are in. Look for this to be a topic of discussion in the upcoming year or years and lets hope the citizens will have a chance to voice their concerns.,"

Wonder if they've considered charging drivers for all the deer they kill ever year on Indiana's highways? That would probably be a revenue windfall for them. :)

It wouldn't surprise me if they did this, they slipped a pending price increase on the classified forest program by us and not many knew about until the proposal was at the governor's desk waiting for his signature.

LTL rounded off numbers and percentage of harvest and landowner harvest numbers and percentage of harvest.

In 2009 LTL holders accounted for 39,000 deer (or 29% of the harvest).

In 2012 LTL holders accounted for 35,000 deer (or 25% of the harvest).
In 2016 LTL holders accounted for 21,000 deer (or 18% of the harvest).

In 2009 Landowners accounted for 22,000 deer (or 16% of the harvest).
In 2012 Landowners accounted for 20,000 deer (or 14% of the harvest).
In 2016 Landowners accounted for 15,000 deer (or 12% of the harvest).

Based on the above, landowner harvest percentages are down 4%, while LTL holders percentage of harvest is down 11% when you compare 2009 versus 2016. The older LTL holders are dieing off or quitting.
