It's supposed to average around $1500 for the year on average. Some people actually bought into the lawyerspeak from Obozo about not raising taxes on the middle class and only sticking it to the "rich". Joke's on you! He said he wouldn't raise INCOME taxes on the middle class. What you are looking at is an effective PAYROLL tax increase.
It depends on your income level. If you are below $10,000 I believe, its something like $350 a year. If you make a million, its about $32,000 a year. I didnt check mine, since its going back to normal next month.

    Who pays what taxes?

Top 1% pays about 37% of all federal income taxes.
    Top 5% pays about 59%.
    Top 10% pays about 70%.
    Top 25% pays about 87%.
    Top 50% pays about 98%.

Bottom 50% pays about 2% of all federal income taxes.

Rich not paying their fair share.....sure.

Also keep in mind that not only did social security tax revert back to 6.2% from the 4.2% it was last year, but the social security wage base increased from $110,100 to $113,700. A person making the maximum in 2012 and in 2013 will pay an additional $2,425.20 in 2013.

Now, to take it a step further, to earn an additional $2,425.20 to cover the additional social security tax, at a 15% federal tax rate (which is very low) an Indiana taxpayer making the maximum wage base would have to earn an additional $3,063.86 in 2013 just to break even.

This table shows how much the Social Security Wage Base has increased in recent years.

    Year Amount
    2004 $87,900
    2005 $90,000
    2006 $94,200
    2007 $97,500
    2008 $102,000
    2009 $106,800
    2010 $106,800
    2011 $106,800
    2012 $110,100
    2013 $113,700

    That's more than $25,000 over a 10 year period.

Here's what I don't understand. People who don't understand that when they pay more taxes, their taxes have been increased. I suppose we should be outraged about passing a tax measure that was not permanent....now let me get in my time machine....

Our government leaders have the power to NOT RAISE TAXES you are acting like because a tax increase happens at a defined time in the future, we should have no problem with that. Our "leaders" could, right now, prevent the tax increase. They choose not to. They are raising our taxes by refusing to act to stop an increase they have the power to prevent.

Is there some ultimate morality at returning to a higher rate such that I should be ashamed at not wanting to pay more taxes this year than last?

2010: Temporary Tax Reduction - Everyone rejoices.

2013: Temporary Tax Reduction Expires - Everyone is outraged by the Tax Increase!

America either has a really short attention span or doesn't understand the definition of "temporary."

No it didnt. They just kicked the can. I doubt theyll make cuts in March either. People on entitlements outnumber the responsible people who want to make sure our nation doesnt lose its way. Itll just spiral out of control until we are at crisis levels.

...and you are still acting like the payroll tax increase had something to do with the so-called "fiscal cliff". Again, it did not.

I agree that people should not be surprised. I wasn't. Many were not....but that misses the point- entirely.

That's like being in remission from cancer for three years and then telling the patient that when the cancer comes back- "hey, we told you that it would probably come back, stop crying."

What makes a tax increase more acceptable just because it was written into the law 3 years ago?

What makes the pre-2010 rates the "right" ones such that a return to them is inherently the right and proper thing?

Had a lady today tell me she was applying for assistance and a black lady threatened 'I'm gonna whoop that white girls ass" when the white girl was in line in front of her. Just thought it was interesting kind of speaks to the entlement mentality
