Helmke will take stage at the City Club to debate Alan Gura, the lawyer who in 2008 won a landmark gun rights case in the U.S. Supreme Court and is lead counsel in another case challenging local gun-control laws.

The Brady Center released a poll Wednesday showing that a narrow majority of Americans - and a larger majority of women - oppose people carrying loaded guns openly in public, a policy supported by the NRA. According to the N.C. Attorney General, 190,000 North Carolinians have active concealed handgun permits.

"The NRA leadership is increasingly out of touch with their membership and the general public," Helmke said.

Would you elaborate on this alleged Coats-Helmke relationship?

Just because Helmke was mayor of Fort Wayne, or is there something more?

In Helmke's book Son of Son of a Politician, he says that when he ran for Mayor, Congressman Coats contributed to his campaign. Here is also what I would consider a defense of Coats.

Wouldn't it be great if Helmke got put on the secret no fly list. They seem to keep missing the point that the times square bomber got put on the list AFTER he purchased the gun. They are just trying to score a win and get the public to focus their attention away from another government organization's failure.

For the sake of pointing out the flaw in the logic: first, Coats isn't a conservative my any stretch so it's not a big surprise that he's friends with people of similar political leanings. Second, the extent that we are judged by the company we keep notwithstanding, as conservatives are we not allowed to be friends with people who don't share our views?

I agree with what you are saying but don't worry....plenty of other Republicans who are rank and file will fill your void. As usual you will see people vote along party loyalty or against the other regardless who is the representative. I mean that from both sides not just the crazy elephants.
