I lived in Troy for 23 years (and I've been in that store, btw )

Troy actually isn't bad, if you can handle the traffic. Too many cars. OP said "Detroit", though, which is a whole different planet. Pretty much anything south of 8 Mile is terra incognita. "Here be dragons" is an apt phrase.
