Has anyone built their own .22Lr ar ?

Or is it as simple as just building an .22 upper ?

I have one M&P 15-22 but I was thinking it would be cool to build my own in 22LR

Well, the upper is most of it, but a .22LR upper does run better on a lower that doesn't have a notched hammer if you are building one from scratch.

Bought a CMMG dedicated 22LR upper love it!! just run a standard lower with a non notched hammer. your not going to gain much over what you already have though.

Unless you are really set on building your own, you would be money ahead with a complete AR like the Colt M4 replica made by Walther. I picked one up, and have really been enjoying it. Prob can't find one now, but I only paid around $450 earlier this year...

I wanted to buy a 22 upper for my ar, but seems cheaper to just buy a whole gun. I didnt look into it too much, but thats what I saw in the sort time I looked.

This helps. I too have been on the fence about a .22 conversion vs. the Colt M4 22. I think Iill wait for a M4 22. Maybe settle for an m&P 15/22

I build mine with a Model 1 Sales barrel I got from VUPDBlue. No different than building a standard AR really.

From my experience the M&P 15/22 is a better rifle. I have some friends that have both and of the two the M&P wins hands down. I've got two of the CMMG 22AR's and shoot them to death. Good luck finding anything right now though.

Here's an old picture of the M4 (it's got more crap on it now....)

I guess I'll give a little more thought into the 15/22. They seem to be more easily available at the moment and those who own them seem happy.

The S&W MP15-22 is a good rifle. I am pretty happy with it.

Since the rifle comes with a conventional combat trigger, I solved that problem by dropping in a Jewel match two stage. It is a lot better. The rear sight is also a standard combat style rear leaf. I drilled and taped the big hole to 1/4 X 32 so it can accept the hooded match sights like found on a Bushmaster DCM. It comes with a quad rail, but I wish it had a round handguard, as I really have no use for that much accessory mounting space and the rails are not comfortable when shooting the rifle. It is really a very light rifle, so I am exploring ways to add some weight. I like drilling quarters at 25 yards in the standing offhand position, and weight helps stablize my hold.
