I'm fat. It's no surprise and I want to be less fat. I ride my bike a surprising amount for a fat person so I'm okay with spending a few bucks on a bike, but I am so far removed from the culture that I don't know what is considered a good deal.

When I was young, I pretty much only rode single speed BMX type bikes. I went to the Bicycle Garage of Indy South on Southport Rd and tried a few bikes. I'm not crazy about mountain bikes as I don't think I'll be doing any off roading with them. I rode a few single speeds (not fixed gears) and I really liked them... one in specific was a Trek Triton.

I rode it around with the 55CM frame and loved it! I unfortunately didn't look at the tag until after I rode it... 699 bucks. I've spent that much on a bike before when I was much younger and rode BMX bikes on dirt tracks and used it on my paper routes. The single speed had a pretty BMX-ish set up for a road bike and allowed me to look much like a respectful bike rider than a grown up repeat-DUI offender who stole a kid's bike while he had it parked outside of game stop.

It is a bit hard for me to swallow to spend that much on a bike as an adult. I wish I could ride it to work but I have extremely strict dress requirements... tie and suit every day but Saturday's and sometimes on Friday.

Anyway, I'm looking for bikes that have a similar set up as the Trek Triton but preferably much cheaper.

I currently have a really vintage 3 speed Hercules and an El Cheapo Wal-Mart beach cruiser that I plan on selling to help fund some of this but I will need the el cheapo until I replace it with something else because I ride it a lot and use it to get around.

Any recommendations of models and/or stores to go bike shopping?

I believe it's a 24 speed. It's the most expensive bike I've ever bought. And it suits my needs. I do wear bicycle shorts under my gym shorts, an it helps more than you think.

I'm not hardcore by any means, but later I hope to move up to a Trek.

Just got a Raleigh comfort bike a few weeks ago and love it. It has 7 speeds and fits me well. Paid $325 (cash price). The shifting is very smooth and I like the wider tires.

It's not a single speed, but I have had one of these for a while and love it.

    Trek Hybrid 7000

Great on pavement or on rough terrain. I wouldn't enter the Tour de France or try to ride it down a mountain, but it's a nice compromise.

Have you been to the Performance Bike store yet, Robb?

It's across 31 from Shallows; south-end of the shopping center where TJMaxx / Chuck-E-Cheese is located.

They have right decent prices on some single speeds. Some even come with a "reversable" rear hub so you can ride fixie if you want.

Ahhh... I'm looking for single speeds or lower gear bikes. I'm glad you found something that works for you. Eventually, I'd like to ride to work more often but I've not found anything feasible yet.

I thought about biking from my house to my parents in the morning. Showering and changing into work clothes there and then biking to work. My parents live maybe a 3/4th mile from where I work. I'd certainly smell fresher than riding my bike the whole way on blistering days like today.

Nope. I've not even heard of that one yet. I'll check it out. Someone mentioned to me something about Grey Goat and we drove past one over the weekend and it was completely closed up and out of business. It was in Southport/Greenwood/Southern Indy area. I'll check out Performance next. Thanks, J!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Find Bikes, Cycling Clothing, Bike Parts & Bike Shoes Or Your Local Bike Store at Performance.

They're a HUGE online retailer of bikes & cycling related goods.

They have a store in Castleton, too, next to Dave & Busters.

Grey Goat has MOVED. They're no longer at 31 / Epler. New address: 7750 S. Meridian St. Indianapolis, IN 46217 Gray Goat Sports: Indianapolis: Bicycles Fitness Running

There's also Matthew's bike shop: http://www.matthewsbikes.com/default_html.htm BIG inventory.

    or: http://circlecitybicycles.com/

    Or:
Indy Cycle Specialists 5804 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46219-6524 (317) 356-458

    or: http://thebicyclestation.com/

ALL should have lower-cost alternatives than that $700 Trek. You should be able to get into a very decent single-speed "road style" bike for half that. Use the savings to upgrade later...or to repair/replace damaged parts. And to buy a pair of cycling shorts.

Any particular reason you want a single-speed?

Having a nice selection of gears makes riding much more enjoyable, at least it does for me, mostly because geared bikes are so much easier to ride, downshift to go uphills easier, upshift to get more speed on flats, dial it in somewhere in the middle to get a comfortable, sustainable cadence going, etc.

I do have a single speed bike but it doesn't get ridden anywhere near as much as my 21 speed does.
