I have an elderly friend that says "back in the day" he used to carry a hammerless j-frame in a sock. Would that be considered an AOW today since it can be fired from within the sock but does not appear to to be a gun?

    In a word, no.

OK, the reason I brought it up is, I've seen some discussion here (on INGO) about a wallet holster with a hole in it that allows the gun to be fired from within being an AOW. That made me think of the sock. What exactly is the story on the wallet holsters? How is it different?

If the wallet has to be opened to fire the gun then it is just a holster. If you fire it from the wallet. It's a issue as I understand things. As for the sock. It's met to hold a foot. Not a gun.
