    Nice.

Saw a few black squirrels again while in Michigan City yesterday.

Had to stop and look for a bit.

Reportedly brought to Goshen in 1800’s from overseas, black squirrels are now predominant at least in city/town areas, not so much in rural areas. They have expanded their territory outward I personally know to adjacent counties. Did not know they were in NWI. Greys have disappeared in our area over last 50 years or so, pretty much red/fox in rural, black in city/urban. And lest I forget, many with red bodies and black tails.

Yep, thinking Spencer Rifle is correct. Looking at my pictures the eyes do look dark. Never knew there was a leucistic squirrel until he pointed it out. They seem somewhat rare, but there is quite a bit out there on the interwebz about them.

In Madison county we have the white tailed squirrels running around. Regular fox squirrels but the whole tail is white not just the tip.

I have seen the blacks in Ohio. None around home.

Black squirrels are prevalent in Michigan. Where my FIL lives, that is pretty much the only color squirrels he has in his yard.

I wonder what the offspring would look like if a black and white squirrel got together? Gray squirrel?;)

Both white and black squirrels are color varieties of gray squirrels. They are the same species and interbreed freely, producing some unusual colorations. Black is dominant, and where they are present they tend to take over the genotype. We have a black squirrel in the local park and have for a few years. Every time I see it I say "There goes the neighborhood," and SWMBO smacks me.

Check out Olney, Illinois - they use the white squirrel as the town symbol.

True albinos are quite rare, about 1 in 100,000 births. Due to lack of eye pigment they tend to have poor vision, and therefore don't usually survive very long in the wild.

I've been to Brevard several times, they have a whole colony of white squirrels. Rumor was the college bred them intentionally.

Sure would make squirrel hunting easier.
