I use a Weber Smokey Mountain (18"). You can get one from Lowe's for $419. It's very versatile and does a great job. I'm also able to travel with it, as it's somewhat portable (good for deluxe camping trips or travelling to friends/family).

It was a good learning tool for me, too, as it's little more "manual" than some of the more modern pellet-fed, close-loop controlled smokers (which are great, but can quickly get expensive).

Plenty of online support for this one, too. Online forums for the Smokey Mountain provide a plethora of recipes, mods, and how-to articles.

    Dang those look good!!!

I use the 22" version. Like you say, it s more "manual" but that is what I wanted.

The pellet grills can be more of a set it/ forget it deal.

I want to get a smoker this year but they are expensive and there’s so many different options. Is there a cheaper brand <$500 that is of some quality?
This would serve you well for years. I bought a similar model, but different brand in 1998. It's still fully functional. Real wood on an offset can create some seriously good products.

My favorite sauce is ketchup. I particularly like it on a good steak.
Literally EVERY time I make a good steak on the grill my son will ask me to grab the ketchup from the fridge. The look I give him is the same every time. Then he just laughs. Told him if I ever saw him put ketchup on a steak I would disown him.

All joking aside I don't really put ketchup on a steak just in case someone thinks I was serious. :): Not saying you but you never know.

The way I like my steak prepared is seasoned with some s&p and grilled to med rare. I like to savor the natural beef flavor without any sauces to dip it in. . My brother on the other hand likes his steak well done. I just smh because IMO it ruins a good steak. Some people like it that way, it's just not for me.

Then there's my nephew that pretty much likes everything well done, sometimes almost to the point of charring but the funny thing is he likes his steak rare.

I smoked wings a couple nights ago while smoking some other stuff. Stuffed them in a Ziploc bag and threw in the fridge. Tonight I tossed them in olive oil and coated in Meat Church Voodoo. Grilled them at 425 until crispy and tossed in homemade wing sauce.

D.kaufman has a free whole hog smoker in the classys. It really just needs a cleaning and shaping. I use the same one for huge brisket.
Didn't even think to throw it in here. Listing below

Here you go @kickbacked it doesn't get much cheaper than this. A couple grates, couple cans of BBQ paint and you're in business.
