My wife and I are planning an anniversary trip and we've never been to Niagara Falls before. For those who have stayed in the area, would you recommend staying on the American or Canadian side?

Depends on what you like to do. We stopped on an unplanned trip just really to see the falls. The Canadian side is geared toward Tourists, lively, with many things to do as a Tourist. Great views from restaurants that offer scenic dining. The American side of the Falls is a Park and Not built up as a Tourist destination. Overall. we enjoyed the Canadian side as 1st timers. We did take the Tour, well worth it. I think it went to 8-10 places, including Maid of the Mist (a MUST Do) Group was always placed in the Front of the line and included any Entrance fees. It was Both on the US-Canadian side. Its been awhile (years), so things may have Changed. You will NEED Passports for the Canadian Side. Falls at Night are lighted. I learned much and saw one of the Great Wonders of America/Canada. HAVE FUN. I always have Great Memories and things to say about that Trip.

We are also planning a trip there this summer. We are staying on the US ( New York) side. No passport needed. Will have personal protection with me.

    Near the big river.
I grew up about 70 miles South of the falls so saw it a number of times. Been back over the years. Last time took my wife there, she had never been.

My advice is go straight to the Canadian side. There is a much better view of the Falls. You can actually stand right near the edge of the falls and look down.
I have always found the Canadians friendly and easy to deal with.

The American side unfortunately is actually a not so nice part of the Buffalo area. Living near Buffalo I don't know if there is a nice area.

If you are on the American side you can go to the bottom of the Falls. I recommend riding the boats. Always wanted to do that as a kid but we couldn't afford it. Finally rode the boat after I was married with kids of my own. It was the last trip my wife of 24 years was able to make before passing from cancer in 2007. So, memories...

While in Canada find a place and try Poutine. Fried taters and gravy . A local dish.

Been to long to remember details.

Maid of the mist is a must, takes you right to the falls.

I remember going down a "cave" to get behind the falls and eatch the water go by but I don't remember what side that was.

Also remember renting a peddle boat for like a half hour in a huge fish pond.

All of this was over 30 years ago...

The "cave" was on the Canadian side. It is actually a bore hole for some construction. Worth the view.

I was to young to appreciate the trip we took but glad I was old enough to remember what I do.

Better than getting to go to disney world when you're 9. 9 months old!!! Thanks mom and dad! :):

Stay on the US side and spend the days on the Canadian side. Lowers your cost and the US side does have some nice places to stay. We went in 2011, but you could stay in a nice room at the Hyatt(walking distance to the falls) for less than you could anyplace in Canada.

Get some cash ahead of time(Canadian) unless you want a boat load of ATM/Transaction fees from your bank. That $3 Canadian coffee could cost you $6-8 US($4.11 at todays exchange rate + fees). It is just simpler and cheaper to have a little cash on hand.

Plenty of shops and such on the Canadian side and the flower garden they put out was nice. They make the US side look like a run down slum in comparison. My information is dated 2011,have not been back.

You can even walk across the rainbow bridge to Canada(no Valhalla at the other end :( ). Do have your passports on you.

Not in New York. (at least not legally). Very anti-gun. And if you're "doing tourist stuff" there, you are no longer protected by USC 926A, so you can't even "possess" an unloaded handgun. I suggest you research first. You may be in New York (prison) longer than expected...

As stated “personal protection”. Not a firearm. I plan to pray - a lot! Also will wear my “run fast” shoes.

We stayed on the Snow Monkey side years ago. Best time is 2 weeks before the season opens. Keep your eyes peeled for crooks walking among you.

Went last year with my family and stayed on the US side. Spent a day touring around that side, the next day we walked across the Rainbow Bridge on 2 separate days. Bought the bus, google WEGO, passes for the Canadian side and just rode the bus up and down in each direction to speed things along. the last night we walked back across the bridge at night just to watch the fireworks. Cave of the Winds is worth it also or the Canadian version.
