About to turn 67. I have all the firearms I NEED, but there is always going to be one I would LIKE to have. P08, Broom handle Mauser, MP40, Thompson all come to mind. Will probably never get one, but I did pick up a Ruger Mk IV a couple of weeks ago. Didn't NEED it, just wanted one - and the price was right.

Don't really NEED that slice of Apple crumb pie either, but...

Turned 69, got my first gun for christmas at age 10(Sears single shot 22), anyway went to the Salem gun show this weekend and realized there was nothing I wanted to buy. Ended up buying some silver coins. I already have most of the classics, Python, SAA, rem 700, browning A5, an AR, several European classic sxs`s, lots of .22`s, a few mil surplus, etc. So I have more then I can shoot, but its more of an end of life decision to enjoy what I already have. Have any of you older retired guys come to the same conclusion? or are you still accumulating?
I don't think I'll ever come to this point in life. There will always be that one I just have to have. I also have a large family many children and grandchildren 5 new grandchildren in the last 2.5 years. So I have to collect many because my plan is to pass down a firearm to all of them.

Soon to be 68 and continue to look, fondle, drool and buy

Most of what I have will go to my kids and grandkids before I die so I can see the big smiles, the twinkle in their eyes and the big hugs that will soon follow.

So.... I'll keep buying whenever I see something I want.

Getting ready to completely retire this summer. Have slowed way down the last few years, think I've bought 2 handguns in the last year, no rifles. Got enough ammo for the rest of my life, so unless its something new I want to try, not even buying ammo. Starting to consider thinning out some milsurps in the next year or so, maybe even a few modern guns that I don't have much use for.
Remember me when the milsurp flows!

I am retired and have already bought my last gun until the next one...

Need has nothing to do with it, want is word of the day. I will already be dead by the time want is no longer the driving force...

Truth is when you retire you have more time to shoot. If it wasn't for air guns, ammo would bankrupt me

I’m 63 and plan on purchasing my last firearm at 65. Then at 70 I plan to start selling them. My wife just laughs when I say this. I fear that by the time I am 70, it will be illegal to sell my collection.

I'm not old yet...just barely clinging to the end of my 4th decade. Lately, though, I've repeatedly experienced going into a gun store and realizing that I'd rather have what's at home in my safe than their entire inventory. Most of what's out there for sale just doesn't excite me, nor do I have a use for it.

The past few years I spent a lot of time and money accumulating and playing with a pretty wide variety of stuff, only to learn that those other things don't do anything better than the platforms I already own, and they were a distraction to my training by eating into my finite range time and ammo. I've started getting out of that mentality and instead focusing on building up my collection of different options within my preferred categories. Not only does this help with consistency in training, but also in parts purchasing and building armoring experience that's commonly applicable to a large portion of my collection.

Right now I'm focusing on the following categories and trying to cover all of my needs within each:

    Striker Handguns: P320 Family
    DA/SA Handguns: P22X Family
    DA Revolvers: S&W (J,K,L, and N)
    SA Revolvers: Ruger Blackhawk
    "Serious" Rifles: AR-15 Platform
    Fun/Hunting Rifles: Marlin Levers
Milsurp: Just common American stuff, and there's a short but expensive list of the ones I still want.

There are a few others I already own that will get kept for one reason or other that don't really fit any of the categories above, but I'm not really looking to branch out any more unless something truly exceptional comes along, or I have a specific need that needs met. Even within these categories, my goal isn't to acquire every example but simply to have a variant that fills any likely practical need that I might have. There really aren't many more that I want or need, and my money will be better spent on components and ammo at this point.

I guess I am kind of lucky. My LGS seems to think that Glocks, Sigs and Rugers are all they need to stock regularly. They are excited about some AR that they are selling a ton of for $400. So if I want something I have to order it. When I used to go over to Midwest all the time, I was bad about making those impulse purchases, no thanks to my dealer...
When you have to order it, you really only get stuff that you really do want and almost need, like my Citori 20 that I am waiting on.. My LGS used to have a tricky manager, if I said I has been looking for something specific, it would appear mysteriously in the gun shop a week or two later. Then I felt obligated to buy it. The group up there now don't play that game.

I'll turn 59 at the end of July. I own way more than I will ever shoot. I have several safe queens. I have been planning on letting go of a few safe queens in November.
Yes I've been in the hobby long enough to maximize my ROI, and yes they are investments.
I do actively shoot on a somewhat regular basis. Having multiples of a few different guns, I will be selling some of those off to get some "grail" guns before I exit the planet.
I have wanted a few "pre-ban" as in pre '89 imports for a long time now, but just can't justify some of the prices that go with them.
But none of what I want has gone down in value, they just keep going up.

To the OP's point, end of life or nearing the end of life......or in my case not quite into my 60's yet, but I have fewer years ahead than what's behind me.
My 3 adult "kids" have no real interest in them except to cash them out when I'm gone. I can do that myself, and most likely will sell most of them off as time marches on.
My Son (middle child) he has two Sisters, him my and youngest daughter have some interest. My oldest daughter has dollar signs in her eyes.

Besides some pre '89 imports there are only a handful of firearms I desire.
I would like one of the new Colt Anaconda's, also when Colt puts out the blued Python's I would like a 4in version.
I have some mild interest in the Springfield Prodigy 4.25in 2011
    Maybe a Tavor 7 (.308)
HK squeeze cocker if I could "fall into" one for a decent price.

    Very true.
It seems that all LGSs stock the same thing..All plastic striker fired Tupperware that you can barely tell apart. Glock sig s&w all look the same. Feel the same same squishy triggers.
The good trade in stuff I like, like the S&W double actions the Colt Revolvers
High Standards Colt Woodsman. 22s all go straight to Gun Joker. That site to me is just for people willing to pay any price for the desireable stuff. The days of walking into a shop and finding a gem are fading away. Don't get me wrong. If you own a shop its your firearms to do with what you see fit. But it wo be nice to see some of that stuff in the case when I walk in.
