I get the best economy at 75-80mph in my truck so this makes me happy. Should save me some money with the four hour round trips to the farm every couple of weeks.

I call complete BS on this one. Not the spirit of your post, but the reality.
30 yrs driving a semi on highways that are deteriorated like downtown Beirut, has shown me that most drivers under 40 years of age cannot understand that their car doesn't drive itself, nor understand that there are repercussions for their actions, but since they only appear in their rearview mirrors, they somehow are not culpable. They cannot fathom vehicle maintenance, such as alignments, tire inflation, load distribution, or cargo securement. They drive white, light blue, silver, grey, or charcoal colored vehicles, which literally disappear in the tire mist behind a semi, they are COMPLETELY INVISIBLE in our mirrors, yet they refuse to turn on any lights as they suddenly appear out of the mist and blow by at 90.
I've witnessed phone use, texting, computer use, book and newspaper reading, lane jacking, makeup application, nail drying, eating, smoking and drinking simultaneously... all while in the drivers seat at triple digit speeds. Their irresponsibility has nearly killed me more times than I've had birthdays. And running nose to tail at 80 or 90 in the left lane is not "sharing the road".
To your point, yes, a good driver, who is experienced, and is only driving, can negotiate a modern interstate, at speed, without incident. Throw in any of the above listed behaviors and all bets are off.
Don't even mention weather....they're either speeding into icing conditions, or they are petrified of a couple raindrops.
Other semi drivers are guilty of their own share of despicable driving habits....I'll give you just one.
Hit a highway construction zone, signs say Reduced Speed 55 mph and All Trucks Use Left Lane. So we slow down, and get in left lane as jersey barriers hem us in on the left and right, and the pavement becomes more uneven. And what do i behold? A conga line of crappy looking rigs, usually Amazon contractors, blasting up the right lane at 70+, with cars in tow, flipping us off. Get a grip, Cletus, your crap isn't any more important than anyone else's. And thanks for drifting into my lane when you're only halfway past me. Some days the disregard is simply stunning.
Tell you what...build cars that shield out all device use above 65mph, and allow 'em to run 95, but mandate that the state staff all construction zones with enough officers to gig EVERY vehicle speeding thru, especially the trucks (that's a $300~800 dollar ticket). You could fund the state budget and have a surplus.
Rant over.... we now return to our regularly scheduled prigramming.
As another trucker, retiring in June with 47 years, I have to say YOU NAILED IT!!!

The headlights is my pet peeve, the auto on headlights was the worst invention because in fog or snow it’s often bright enough that the lights don’t turn on, but as you said you can’t see them. Dash lights are on whenever running, I suspect they just don’t realize often no head or tail lights.

A few places out west now have 85 mph speed limits. People regularly do over 100, especially at night in the middle of nowhere.

I would still rather they get nothing, nothing personal

They aren't making money, it's just offsetting some of the losses. The man-hours dedicated to court alone more than eat up that $3. Used to have to buy paper ticket books as well, now it's all electronic. I'm not sure if departments pay licensing fees on the software or not.

Weak sauce. But it was common on a lot of older cars; they'd shut off at some speed far below their maximum attainable one.

Typically tied to the speed rating of the tires that come standard.

Most accidents accur at speeds below 40 mph. Maybe lower speed limit to 30 everywhere?

You think this may have something to do with most accidents occurring at intersections and in parking incidents? IIRC, failure to yield on a left turn, unsafe backing, and following too close were the major causes. Side note: Failure to yield on a left turn was also one of the big ones that got motorcyclists killed. The relatively low speeds were more...kinetic to a cyclist for obvious reasons.

I remember the death of the 55mph speed limit and states being able to set their own. 65mph became pretty common, now 70. 80 out west. It's fine for the most part.

To be clear and in context my last statement “maybe lower to 30 mph” should be read in purple as it was being sarcastic at what was being said.

This Statehouse stuff is highly addictive :lmfao:

Like I said... somewhere around here with Ben Smaltz as the author it's worth supporting for his work on ConC.

If somebody wants to/can make it Tuesday I say go for it! Room 404 is the Ways and Means room and comes in third (to the Senate/House chambers) as the best place to sit. Not a big room but nice chairs. You testify seated (not a fan of that) but you face the committee (am a fan of that.) They are not also behind you (chambers,) you aren't testifying in a hallway (Rooms 156 B and C,) or on the 50 yard-line testifying to the sideline (Room 130 and 156-A.)

This one could be interesting. Should be a good mix of truckers, Vette owners, grannies who drive Buick LeSabres, cryin Doug Carter, guys with mullets... :lmfao:

HB 1308 is up for hearing today.

I will be Kabitzing the action in the style of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 and the old 90s Comedy Central coverage of the conventions.

Chris Norville is up next, From Indiana Toll Roads.

Against. Mostly telling the same horror stories... I suspect he is worried higher speeds mean more maintenance costs.
