I'm a S&W handgun fan, always have been, from a model 63 on up to a model 629. I did have a Ruger bearcat but that was pretty much it as far as Rugers went.

Anyway, as some of you already know, I recently purchased a Ruger GP-100 in 10mm simply because it was a 10mm revolver. Now S&W does make a 10mm revolver in the model 610 but to my mind it seemed larger than nessasary for the 10mm.

After purchasing the GP-100, I compared it to a N frame S&W on a web site designed just for comparing handgun sizes and low and behold I discovered that they are the same size much to my surprise, but the Ruger feels a little smaller than my S&W 629 when I grip it.

So I found time to examine the GP-100 and of course I had to strip it down to see what made it tick. I watched a few u-tube videos on how to disassemble the GP-100 so that wouldn't screw things up and was amazed at how simple it was.

Well, after I got inside and looked things over I was amazed at the craftsmanship. It's a high quality firearm.

Now being the tinkerer I am, I ordered a Wolff spring pack to experiment with and will have to test it out for reliability, but it feels great. So I oiled it up and put it back together. Now I need to get to the range and see how it shoots.

Ruger revolvers have been my favorite revolver for some time. I owned a Colt King Cobra in 357 and would never own another. Only wish I still had it as the $ on those have increased in the market so much, but that gun was not worthy of the $.

On the other hand I definitely wish I had the Rugers back that I have let go over the years (GP100, Super Blackhawk and an SP101). They were solid workhorse guns.

Had a Blackhawk for years and love it.
Bought an SP-101 in .327fed/mag a couple of years ag and was amazed at the factory trigger.
I really like the way the trigger assembly comes out as a pack.
The frame size of the SP-101 is perfect for carry in my opinion.

It's hard not to like a Ruger wheel gun.

I have one in .357 mag.
    Good wheel guns!
    Enjoy!

I have a Ruger SP-101 snubby, and LOVE it. I know, as long as I live long enough, I WILL one day, soon I hope, add a GP-100 to the stable. I`d like a snubby, but would consider a 4" barrel to make it legal for deer hunting.

I have a question though, aren`t there a great many GP-100 models? I know I`ll want mine in .357 Magnum, but other than that, I don`t know about the various models.

Would the 7-round cylinder be of concern for long-term use versus the 6-shot cylinder?

My 6in GP with the weigand rail and a romeo5 will put them all in a 9in plate with minimal effort at 25yds.

I know the Ruger GP100 3" in .357 magnum is a very comfortable revolver for EDC...and it's accurate enough!
A 4" model will definitely get 'er done too!
The 7-round GP100's, initially had a few bugs in them, but I believe Ruger got them sorted out!
I initially wanted a 2.5" 7-shot .357 when they first came out, but ended up finding a very clean 3" version with a 6-round cylinder as it matched equipment (grips, holsters, speed loaders, etc.) that I already had.
For hunting, I've found that the 5" version is a little nicer offering a longer sight radius than the 4" version, but yet is not as cumbersome or nose-heavy as a 6" barreled version is.

I really want a half lug 4in GP100 Ruger made in the 90's (or so) with compact grips and fixed sights.
    I actually have a full-lug, 4" fixed-sight GP100 from 1995...it was never a production revolver at least according to Ruger's records!
Overall, it's probably my favorite revolver...it's accurate as heck, too, shooting to P.O.A. and right down the middle, for a fixed-sight revolver.

Had a 4" GP-100 stainless back in the late 1980s and traded it a few years later , did not have much money in my mid 20s! It is the one Ruger I wish I had kept. They are still out there of course but back then it was under $300. A great shooter - the SA was not crisp like my Smiths but still put them where you aimed. And the grip just felt "right" in my hand.

Well I can declare it reliable. I fired a bag full of rounds through the Match Champion and got good solid primer strikes and I didn't even have to adjust the sights, they were right on, I even hit the center of the X-ring on the first shot. My hand loads proved to be very stought but no leading, but the powder burns very dirty and I will have to clean it out with the bore-snake. All in all I'm very pleased with it.

Now I did install a Wolff, shooters spring pack for the GP-100 and boy was that easy.
I used the lightest springs first and the SA pull was comfortably south of 3#, the DA pull dropped from roughly 14# down to 8# and is smooth enough that you can stage each shot easily.

I have come away with a new respect for the Rugers.
