This is really stupid. The US's participation in it won't reduce the Earth's temperature. It will, however, transfer wealth from this country to other countries. It's a sham.

There is no requirement for the president to salute uniformed soldiers. In fact, it was started by the guy between Carter and Bush, after he inquired what he should do when he was saluted by military members. Further, the as used in example you provided, "salute," I don't think is meant as literally engaging in the hand gesture, but rather an acknowledgement of respect extended.

One president starts doing something and then it becomes a tradition and every president is expected to do it from then on. I think that's kinda silly. Like exposing his tax records. That's only a social requirement now, and it shouldn't be. Probably a condition of running for high public office should be a prepared summary of financial status, conducted by a certified auditing firm. The details of would not be available to the press or the public. And stiff penalties for details getting leaked.
