Hosting isn't just one thing. It is multiple services, and is best segregated so you can't run into this type of issue. Hosting at company X, DNS at company Y, Registration at company Z. Depending on traffic you might be able to utilize a hosting provider like mw.net for hosting the site, but use EasyDNS for DNS, and use Namecheap as your registrar. Now Namecheap could decide to not do registar services, so you move to TuCows or Domain.com or some other one.

As always make sure you have a backup somewhere.
