How could they have found the first five shots were justified and the following three were not? Also, where did you read that the kids were shot at while they were driving away?
They could have believed his testimony about what was said to/about him, and that the victim was opening the door and he saw something coming up that he believed was a shotgun. Which could justify shooting. When they were driving away, they were fleeing and no longer posed a threat.
