First, the confession. I'm actually a 16 year old attending high school on the south side of Indianapolis. However, all the guns I have are "mine" as in I've given my dad money for stuff and he was nice enough to buy guns for me ;) So all the gun stuff I post is from my experiences.

Now, on to the "What about the Children?" part. Today I got back a sociology paper with a question that was asking my opinion. I had a choice of four different welfare programs to chose from and explain which one, in my opinion, was the "best" one. I pretty much said I didn't agree with any welfare but didn't give a smart answer and explained my position.

My teacher counted the question wrong and wrote this:

Can a teacher do this on a question that asks my opinion? School is almost over and I need these points I missed. This really pisses me off :xmad:

    Here's my theory on this.

What about the children = I dont have an argument that counters yours, but you're still wrong and should feel like sh*t.

It's like getting an explanation from an Engineer that is say, "Basically" every couple of words. That also means that they more than likely don't know sh*t.

    Hopefully not Genera
BS comment by the teacher on a pretty loaded question. Don't know how much credit you got, I would argue the point that "none" is a valid answer, but if you didn't back it up with a good explanation, yeah, you should probably miss the points for that (it does say 'why' after all).

At least you're thinking with your head when it comes to this stuff and not drinking the Kool-Aid. Maybe we aren't boned yet after all...

They left you 1.5" at the bottom of the page to explain your position for/against four pieces of legislation that had their own whole page?

An important lesson I learned in "school" - sometimes there is a difference between the RIGHT answer, and the answer that will earn you credit. Knowing one means you are a good student. Knowing BOTH means you are a good person.

Send your teacher a note, admitting you "misunderstood" the question. While you stand by your opinion, of the 4 pieces of legislation being discussed, XXXXX seems to add the most value because {insert what the teacher would like to hear}.....

Maybe you will get credit, and maybe not.

I lost all credit. I did back it up with an explanation.

    What about charities?
    The church?
    Individual responsibilities?

And good for you for writing what you believe, regardless of the response.

I brought that up a few days back and said the same thing. Preeety much got blank stares from the class.

Unless the questions had a "what about the children" aspect to them, then I'd say the teacher is off base. You are not a mind reader. If (s)he wanted an answer based upon the welfare of children, then that should have been so stated.

Have you asked the teacher to explain why (s)he placed such a comment?

EDIT: After re-reading the question I see "... the most appropriate ..." which therefore asks for you to select one. Doesn't mean you have to completely agree with the particular legislation, but needed to make a choice and then explain your choice.

I still have no explanation for the "children" comment.

The "what about the children" sounds like driving for an emotional appeal, which may or may not be appropriate, but given that the question was "which of these 4...", I wouldn't think the teacher is out of line not giving any credit.

Like eldirector said, despite your personal feelings on the issue the question was a pretty easy of choices. You probably could have guessed going into that answer that you weren't addressing the questions asked. If you don't mind giving up the points to make your point, good on you, but otherwise sometimes you have to play to the crowd.

Something like, "While I don't feel any social welfare programs are appropriate, I would pick xxxxx if I were forced to. Here is why:"

If you don't mind, what were the 4 pieces of legislation? Can you show that part?

I can't really read your answer either. Something is cut off.

Sure thing. Let me get home first and I'll edit this post.

    EDIT:

Those four pieces of legislation would be the: 1935 Social Security Act, the 1964 Economic Opportunity Act, the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, and finally the 2006 Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 (not a typo).

My answer is: None of them because I believe if you don't have money because you didn't pay attention in school or because you were irresponsible you don't deserve free money every month.

I think that now because I'm thinking of it my answer could be cleared up a little but it would contain the same answer.

I think jake has a pretty good point here.

You're not going to change this idiot's opinion. Unfortunately, she won this round and you lost, in the grand scheme of things. So you have to decide what's more important to you. Your grades, which have some impact on your future? Or standing up to some nitwit who gets her political information from facebook and PBS?

I'll take a guess and ask if the question was about drug testing "welfare" recipients? The reason I suspect this is because many people wonder how taking food stamps and health insurance away from druggie parents who don't even stay sober long enough to eat anyway is punishing anyone but their kids. The argument to that is "druggie parents who don't care if their kids eat shouldn't get to keep their kids anyway". And then we move on to the current state of foster care and so on.

You may be right. Are druggie parents known for feeding their children even if receiving benefits?
