I work downtown and am always looking to find new places to eat a great lunch that aren't chains. Please post your favorites, what you like to eat there, and any additional info you want to share. (Price, wait time, type of clientel, etc...)

I'll start off with a new place I just found this past Friday:

    Maxine's Chicken & Waffles

Don't let the location (shares a building with a gas station) or the lack of an expensive dining room decor fool you, (definitely no need to 'dress up') this place is GREAT! I had a burger (the "Uncle Henry") that was awesome. It comes with American cheese, applewood bacon and BBQ sauce. The fries tasted great, crisp and hot, and with a hint of some seasoning on them. I had gone to the bathroom to wash up before sitting down and so the waitress missed my table for a moment. She apologized and brought me a free chicken wing to eat while I waited for my order! The wing was good, and I've been told by my co-workers that they also love the place. I will definitely go back!

The price is typical for downtown, it was about 10 bucks for my lunch with water to drink.

I can't wait to try their peach butter and cornbread!

Oh, and I was told by co-workers that if you order the chicken it can take a little bit because they are frying it up on-demand for you, it takes a bit to get the chicken golden brown when it's done fresh and done right!

    Give it a try!

Here are a few of my favorites:

    Thai Taste in Castleton

    Hella's Greek Cafe in Nora

    The Friendly Tavern in Zionsville

I'm sure there are others, but those came to mind first.

Scotty's Brewhouse is probably one of my favorite restaurants. Never had a bad meal there and the service is always spot on.

    745 Pub

The 745 Pub is great. 745 Mass Ave. Good food and great wait staff. It does get busy which is always a good sign. Right across the street from the IFD museum and union hall.

Siam square (thai) on virginia. Pa Nang curry, Pad Thai, or Thom Ka Ghai

Hoaglins on mass ave - everything is amazing however i always order the filet of beef sandwich... i would seriously punch my mother in the face for one right now.

    Yats...pretty much anything

Bank one building 2nd floor if you feel like a salad bar, otherwise skip it.

    India Garden on Delaware

Bazbeaux (sp?) pizza mass ave- salads and specialized toppings

New mexican place on meridian just south of georgia that's good but can't remember the name.

Peppy's on virginia if you're in the mood for breakfast...and hepatitis

    _________

maxine's chicken and waffles is good but, i don't like eating with the homeless and folks that just left the arrestee processing center on market. If you do decide to eat there, do so armed. The police get at least 5 runs a day either there or the gas station its next to.

As far as i know there is NO good chinese (other than PF chang$)

    He said downtown.

Scotty's is great but it is a chain.

You do not say what you are looking for but have you tried Saffron?

Welcome to Saffron Cafe! Located in downtown Indianapolis

If you go on Saturday night you can hear the lute player. Food just goes better with lute playing.

Big Ol plus 1 to kirk for mentioning the saffron! The lamb tajine is amazing and the baklava is stellar.

Speaking of baklava, the greek islands on meridian and mccarty is good too.

Shapiros is also good but you may need a second mortgage to afford it.

Wait, no one has made this an authentic INGO restaurant thread.

    So, I will:

"There ain't no non-chain restaurants in downtown, 'cause all I see is Arby's when I drive home."

There, now it is an authentic INGO thread.

I love the Red Key Tavern over on College Ave. Place is hidebound, rumpled and set in it's ways. Just like me.
