Her name is Jessica, a very nice girl and a friend. She is also an excellent violinist.

In the bali community they call it "bleeding for the cause" when you get cut flipping. My daughter one a Les Vorhees Custom Bali by being the youngest (10) and only female competitor in the first competition at Baliville in Baltimore four years ago. I took a nice stab wound to the hand flipping a BM 47 a few years back. There was stuff hanging out of it so I pushed it back in a butterfly stitched it.

is it legal to carry a butterfly knife in Indiana?

I believe the IC says you just can't carry switch blade. Assisted-opening is okay, but if it opens itself with the push of a button, that's a no-no.

    Indiana Code 35-47-5 said:
    IC 35-47-5-2
Knife with blade that opens automatically or may be propelled
Sec. 2. It is a Class B misdemeanor for a person to manufacture, possess, display, offer, sell, lend, give away, or purchase any knife with a blade that:
    (1) opens automatically; or
    (2) may be propelled;
by hand pressure applied to a button, device containing gas, spring, or other device in the handle of the knife.
    As added by P.L.311-1983, SEC.32. Amended by P.L.70-2000, SEC.2.

I've actually became very re-fascinated with them again lately. Spyderco makes a neat looker, but I will likely get a cheaper one from Bladeops. I found a lot of very well done instructional videos on Youtube. I think I need to get a trainer as well. I like my fingers in one piece.

I have one I bought in Switzerland about 15 years ago. It seems to be of good quality and is fairly heavy. I have always wondered about it but don't really know much about it.

I still remember when my dad brought a balisong home for me during one of his trips back to the PI. I asked him to teach me how to open and close it. So he took it, flipped it open and closed faster than I could follow and said, "Go practice."

I had one for about 3 days. I bought it in Italy, then 3 days later was told by an italian cop that they were illegal in Italy... if they're illegal to sell, use and possess in Italy, how did I buy it in Italy? :dunno:

Ya, these things are fun, had an old one I recently found, sharpened the **** out of it, decided to flip it around with my left hand a few times (I'm right handed) went to close the thing and ended up needing stitches in my ring and pinky fingertips after I sliced em to near the bone

    That thing is hot!!!

Reading about all these fine people cutting their hands to crap will definitely keep me from ever buying one (not the $1600 one, any of them)

I have one from Batangas, where they originated. Heavy 5" blade with brass frams and stag handles. It is the real deal. I was studying FMA when I was younger and brought it to my instructor. He said: " I don't know how to flip it open fast, since it was not common on my Island, but I can teach you to USE it." That set the tone for me, and I have only been concerned with deploying one rapidly and securely.

Another Pinoy from LuZon showed me how to open it quickly for fighting. Only two variations for regular grip, one for reverse. If you can, get Cacoy Hernandez' book, which I discovered later in my training. He tells some great stories and shows these same methods. It is nothing but practical and WIN. Nothing showy or flashy.

I still have my origninal and a Benchmade Titanium frame Balisong. They are not as fast as most assisted or autos nowadays. The Benchmade has a Weehawk blade with a tapered tip that makes it like a folding dagger. Wicked little knife.

I think where these knives shine is their simplicity (if you buy a strong one) since there are no springs to breaks, they are easy to clean, and the new ones are made with hex screws. If I was stuck on a deserted Island and wanted a folder, this might be it. They also make a nice less than lethal device closed, as Mercop said, if you have trained with a kubotan, yawara stick or tabak-toyok.

The legal hassles for civillians with these knives may negate any advantages.

I hear so many people come up with the "butterfly knives are illegal" story yet they've been around and for sale and I've owned ones since I was 8yrs old so for the past 15 years I have seen nothing to say that they have been illegal

In some U.S. states it is illegal to possess and/or carry such a knife in public. In certain jurisdictions, butterfly knives are categorized as a "gravity knife", "switchblade", or "dagger" although they are also occasionally outlawed by name ("butterfly knife"). The knife is illegal in California if blade length exceeds two inches. In a recent US Federal Court case, Spyderco, Inc. pleaded guilty and was fined $75,000 for sending butterfly knives through the United States Postal Service. Spyderco admitted that from June 2005 through January 2007, it had mailed butterfly knives, after importing the knife components from Taipei, Taiwan, through the Port of San Francisco and the Port of Oakland, to Golden, Colorado.
