So I really don't know anything about competition, but it sounds like fun. I saw the video of the 14 year old girl in competition, and her course looked like fun. Any ladies on here competing now? What type of competition, what handgun? I have a Taurus 709 slim now, but I'm open to buying something new for this. Hubby was looking at a new gun today, so I thought I might like another, too! :draw:

There are several women who are regulars at USPSA and IDPA matches in Indiana, but I don't think any of them are on INGO.

Thanks for the info, Coach. That's a little out of the way for me, but it sounds like a great course. And what's up, INGO ladies? Why aren't you competing? Pros/Cons? (Other than cost?!)
And how much does it cost to participate besides the rounds and gear?

I never even thought about competitive shooting mainly because I know very little about it.

We can teach you all about it in the class and Hickman and others have video all over this site. It is always a good time.

Ok Coach, point me in the right direction. Where do I start? What is the best video or site to introduce me to competitive shooting?

    YouTube - hickmanplace

Hickman has some good stuff from South Central, WVPPS, Friday Night Steel.

    Good place to begin

On Youtube search USPSA Indiana Section and Jake Martens has some good stuff there as well.

Thanks for the info, Coach. I have some "learning" to do. :)

I watched the first vid on Hickman's Youtube. I love it when they hit the steel in order... the sound moves up in pitch.

And how much does it cost to participate besides the rounds and gear?

The cost for just a local monthly match is usually $15-$20 (some clubs will discount if you help set up).

What is the best video or site to introduce me to competitive shooting?

just go to youtube and search "uspsa" or "idpa" and you'll find hours of videos.

I never even thought about competitive shooting mainly because I know very little about it.

If you are interested in practical shooting:

    USPSA:
uspsa.org has nearly everything you need to know located on it's web page, including a tool that gives you info on all the participating clubs in your state.

For a summary of the sport:
    http://uspsa.org/dw/whatis.html

    What you need to start:
    http://uspsa.org/dw/gettingstarted.html

The rules to determine if your gear is legal:
(note there is a list of approved guns for production division)
    http://uspsa.org/rules

They'll even send you an information packet:
    http://uspsa.org/dw/moreinfo.html

    IDPA:
IDPA.com has less info, but they do also have a club locator.

Here is a summary of the game:

Here is the idpa rule book to determine if your gear is legal:

Cathy, my wife, will be shooting her first match with ACT March 20, if I remember the date correctly. She's excited about it, looking forward to it. It'll be a step up for her from practicing with Airsoft guns in the trailer, and punching paper.

She'll be shooting her Rock 1911. It's not necessary to go out and buy a new gun, you can shoot with what you carry if you want to try the sport out and see what you think. You aren't going to "win" your first matches anyway. It's easier, of course, if you don't shoot snubbies, whether of the revolver or semi-auto kind, but no less fun with the little guns, at least IMHO. It's a pretty fair bet I'll be shooting a Taurus 85 at that same match. That'll be exciting LOL. There are real world advantages to shooting what you carry, at least now and then. No better way to really learn to shoot your EDC than standing up in front of a bunch of people and competing. When you enjoy yourself and want to get more serious about it, you'll want a full size gun, and which class you want to shoot will have some bearing on which one.

Of course, if you have the coin, it'd be a shame to waste a good excuse to buy a new gun right away!
