THIS IS JUST A FEELER AT THIS TIME. IDEAS ARE STILL BEING GENERATED.

Spring/Summer 2013 Winamac DNR would like to host a youth day where new youth shooters can come to the range and be given and intro to firearms, the safety rules and get to shoot some .22lr rifles.

NWI INGO* has been approached to help co-sponsor the event. We would be doing the instructing and supplying the equipment while DNR would close the range for the event as well as promote it.

At this time I would like to get an idea from INGO (mainly NWI INGO) if you can and would be interested in

    1) teaching the kids
    2) could supply a 10/22 or other similar .22lr rifle
    3) could donate either ammo or food products (hot dogs/burgers/etc)
    4) promote the event and/or car/van pool youth if needed
    5) possible corporate sponsors
    any combination of the about

AGAIN THIS IS STILL IN THE EARLY PLANNING STAGES BUT BEFORE I MEET WITH WINAMAC DNR I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WE CAN PROVIDE/HELP WITH FOR THIS IDEA.

Only vote in the poll if you would be willing to help.
    Thanks!

*NWI INGO does not have the blessing of INGO (ie. Fenway) to use the name "NWI INGO" for this event at this time. As such I use that term loosely since that is what WINAMAC DNR refers to us at.

MODs I am reporting this own post so you can bring this to the attention of Fenway and start your own internal talks regarding the name and the history behind why we have been asked to do this.

Refer to this point for what occurred this past month at the Meet & Shoot.

If I am still in the area (a distinct possibility) I can attend, help teach or hand out flyers before the event. I know a couple Boy Scout troops in the area, and I am sure that I can get the word out to most of them as well.

I can assist with teaching and supply 1022's... It was my understanding from my chat with the RO that they were looking at gearing this towards hunting firearms... So I can supply some shotty's if you like also... let me know what you need...

Happy to help instruct. Also have three 10/22s and a Marlin 60 to loan.

If shotguns are part of this, I can also loan two 12 gauges, but it most certainly would not be my area of expertise instruction-wise.

@GB the whole thing is still in flux in terms of what they would like to do. Possible ideas was
    - hunting intro (ie. Shotguns)
    - intro to firearms for new youth shooter w/ focus on single parent homes (ie no dad in kids life)
    - youth handgun/rifle safety

So until Italk to them not sure which way we are going.
I figure if we did 2 to 3 kids per instructor on the 25 and 50 we would need 8 rifles and 8 instructors and we could do 24 kids at one time. Maybe do 2 shifts so 48 kids total

No idea on how many kids they are trying to get.
Using the 50 would require some portable stands to bring that line up as well unless we go scoops but those are details we still need to iron out with the ideas.

Right now for this post Ineed to see if we have at least 8 instructors and 8 to 16 riffles (1 backup in case we need it).

We currenlty feed 30-40 at the meet & shoots so 3 cooks + the grills we have so food/equpment wise we are ok just need to buy the food/plates/etc see if we can get them donate etc.

I do not plan on teaching just cooking and ensuring everyone has everything they need.

Thank you all for your support so far.

Well as far as 10 22's I could provide...

    Got :
    3 scoped
    1 open sights

Got a Savage bolt 22 WMR scoped too...

Also can supply a AR or two, one with a 22 conversion kit...

Got shotty's too.... all 12 guages though..

Plus if they want to do a this is a whatever historical firearm I can help out in that area too...

    I'm up for teaching.
    Have a 10/22 and MP15-22.
    If pistols are brought I have a S&W MP22.

Might have to burn a vacation day for it though. I work most weekends.
I would recommend 2 youth per instructor max.
If they had experience, it would be differnet.
But, you don't know their level of experience.

    Thread tagged for future updates.

I think we would be safer if we did one on one. One 'instructor' to one child on the line. Other than that I don't see any problems....

I have seen the 4-H teachers with up to 3 kids (2 watching; 1 shooting) and 1 parent looking as well and thus where the up to 3 kids came into play.

But one on one or two one one will work as well. Will depends on the comfort level of the teachers and how many kids we get.

Not ever having taught kids the details of how ya want to handle it we can hit later. From a logistic's point of view I'm trying to wrap my head around a schedule.

ex. 3 hours with group 1; rotate those kids to eat/snack while group 2 shoots and group 1 does NRA eddie eagle or otherstuff etc...

I'm in. I can bring my GSG-522 (will most likely have an M&P22 as well if I get it for my wife soon that I can bring)

    I can help instruct

I can bring ammo (lots of .22LR is cheap and I keep getting coupons from Dick's)

Can also bring my 2 boys (or not)

I also have a Sony HD camcorder that I could bring for video as well..

Or I can bring equipment/ammo for everyone to use and cover the video aspect as well.. I'm flexible and open to ideas.

Just a few days left on the poll.
Good to see so many "teachers".
So lets move this along then to get some ideas in the works.

I'm not a teacher and won't be teaching so here is where I need your (the teacher's) input.

How many students do you think you want per teacher?
How much time? 1 hr, 2 hr, etc?

Figured with the number of teachers we can do both the 25 yard (iron sights) and the 50 yard (scopes) and get the kids to rotate between the 2 areas. Say they do 2 hours on irons, then move over to 2 hours on scopes, then lunch then ????

    @MODs
Any word from Fenway on what I wrote? Have the MODs talked/reviewed what I wrote?

OK then with the poll closed it looks like we have at least 11 instructors. Hopefully we can find 1 more (i'm sure we can). So that give us 24 kids (max) that we can handle per session.

I'm going to work on a draft of our ideas to present to WINAMAC.
My question for the instructors. How much time per session?

    My inital though was

8:30AM EST - Safety Briefing, the rules, assignment of kids/teachers

    9AM EST Iron Sights @ 25 yard (6 teachers; 12 kids Group A)
    Scopes @ 50 yard (6 teachers; 12 kids Group B)
    (3 hours of shooting) :dunno:

NOON EST Lunch - burgers & hot dogs

    1PM EST Iron Sights @ 25 yard (6 teachers; 12 kids Group B)
    Scopes @ 50 yard (5 teachers; 12 kids Group A)
    (3 hours of shooting) :dunno:

Seems like 3 hrs is a bit long but then again not sure?

    4PM EST Done

Didn't see the thread until today. I can help teach and can bring a 10/22 iron sight and scoped savage 64. I taught 4-H shooting sports for 14 years and am certified as a Rifle and Pistol instructor.
