Haven't heard of 454, but I've not been in that end of the business for a long time. Everything we spec nowadays for commercial/industrial air conditioning is using 410.
Its what they are going to use when they quit making r410a equipment here in the next year or so. Also looks like that deadline to stop making 410 equipment got moved back a year.

The government sure screws up things.
I was working on enough cars that when KMart had the cans of R-12 for sale for less than $1., I bought 3 dozen. Then I switched jobs, and they sat on the shelf. A friend offered me $5 a can. Since I did not have any R-12 cars, I sold them and felt like I should have charged less. It must have been ok, because we are still friends.

I bet it leaked out into the atmosphere. I'm calling AOC right now
I find it interesting that my A/C can leak it all and it's ok, but if I need to DIY my own repair it's illegal for me to release it (accidentally or purposely). Unless you're a certified technician I can't even rent a refrigerant recovery system to DIY even though I know how. I was quoted almost $1200 just to evacuate my heat pump to replace a TXV.

Makes no sense when I could let my system "leak" until dead rather than intervening and fixing it myself.

Depending on where the TXV was located, you can close the liquid service valve with the compressor running, wait until the sound changes and then close the suction valve/kill power. That'll pump the refrigerant into the condensing unit using its compressor and you can work anywhere between the discharge and suction valves of the unit. If it's in the condensing unit itself...

MANY years ago, on the last day that common mortals could buy R-12 refrigerant without a license, I bought a 30# tank while I still could.

I had two 1960's cars that I thought I'd use it for recharging their AC units.
I never got around to using it, so it's just been sitting for all these years.

It's still in the box and un-opened.
HOW MUCH would this be worth today?
I JUST put this 30 LB NOS tank of R-12 up for sale in the Classifieds "Non-Firearms Related" section.
