In one of the last examples of this, the undercover cop was the instigator organizing the protest, "flashed" the money to make the protest happen, drove some of the protesters to the rally and rented a truck to haul the rest of them to the site. When it went to trial, the cop offered to testify for the defense because he supposedly had a crisis of conscience and realized what he had done was ethically wrong. The whole operation supposedly blew about $700,000 in supporting the operation, costs incurred in arresting all the protesters and court costs. The .gov decided to drop the charges once the cop volunteered to testify for the defense.
