Check out the Springfield Ultra Lites, or the EMPs. Blue collar price, Springfield reliability.

If your price range is low ($350) you can't go wrong with a Bersa UC .45 plainfield shooting supplies. Just get the black matte version. Their nickel finish flakes off. Great shooters that conceal well.

I dont like the sub-compact or micro 1911's. I would recommend a Kahr PM45 or G36. Both are great guns that shoot great.

Go handle a M&P45c if you have a dealer in your area. I don't think you will find a better feeling or handling .45ACP in a compact form factor.

Glock 36. remember the glock rifling gives the bullet a little more velocity than the same length barrels with standard rifling

That's the downside; new ones aren't cheap. As far as reliability and maintenance, it's like any other gun (or car, for that matter), if you get a good one and keep it lubricated it will be great. If you get a lemon, you're screwed.

The new Kahr PM45 is supposed to be the cats pajamas.

The wife has a Kimber Ultra CDPII - very slick, but you'll need a few more cubic dollars however over the Kahr.
