Midwest College Students Told to Disavow ‘American-ness, Maleness, Whiteness, Heterosexuality’

A political science professor at Butler University asks students to disregard their “American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status” when writing and speaking in the classroom – a practice the school’s arts and sciences dean defended as a way to negate students’ inherent prejudices.

The syllabus of the course at Butler, a small Midwestern liberal arts institution in Indianapolis, spells out that students should use “inclusive language” because it’s “a fundamental issue of social justice.”

“Language that is truly inclusive affirms sexuality, racial and ethnic backgrounds, stages of maturity, and degrees of limiting conditions,” the syllabus states, referencing a definition created by the United Church of Christ.

The syllabus of the class, called Political Science 201: Research and Analysis, goes on to ask students “to write and speak in a way that does not assume American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status, etc. to be the norm.” It is taught by a black, female professor.

In an interview with The College Fix, Jay Howard, dean of Butler’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, denied this practice essentially presumes every student who walks through the door is a racist or misogynist.

All i got to say is wow, i guess it is an obama world!

It's not like people can just write from their own point of view and the reader can take that into account or anything.

I didn't take it as denying who you are, but rather don't make assumptions that others are like you. Granted, the wording is super-creepy but without more information we're all just kind of guessing what they really meant.

I know a few of the profs in that department, and this doesn't terribly surprise me. Being controversial is part of the curriculum. This is also a research and writing course, and stresses factual, non- (or low) bias writing.

Of course, no one is required to take that course (unless you are a poly-sci major). Let the enrollment sit at zero for a couple of semesters, and the syllabus will change.

I breathe air......eat food.......I exist......I am not a minority so I am obviously a racist bigot as this is a trait that is ingrained into the white male genome......that and the desire to enslave non-white humans.....Yes, that is me........Please, allow me to offer up 1/2 of my earnings in the form of taxes as a form of penance for the egregiuos crime of being born white.....I will go to the end of the line when being considered for any position with a government position......after all, I am one OPPRESSIVE son of a *****.....My lavish lifestyle and obvious wealth reflect this..........So if I reform and change my ways by performing an act of socialist good will like, giving my golf clubs to some guy in Botswana named Nacrumba Chutma, I can then be a part of the "kool kids klub"? Just have to shorten the name by using the initials.....donate the proceeds to the diversity council...maybe build a Nelson Mandela statue to replace that white male phallic symbol in monument circle......I am feeling better about myself already! Though I understand what she was trying to say, she's an idiot in the way she presented it. My degree is Poly Sci, and the techinque the prof was trying to explain, is common in Poly Sci non-fiction pieces. Profs want their students to write without bias or a slant. For instance, writing a piece about Russia one shouldn't look at it from the American perspective. When writing about abortion, one shouldn't look at if from the female perspective.... and so on, and so one.
That prof is stupid if she said what is indicated without detailing.
