I find myself increasingly unable be friends with people who are pseudo-liberal socialist-statists, whether they acknowledge they are or not. I continue to drift further away from people in my life who express such socio-political beleifs and agendas. I find it difficult (usually impossible) to become friendly with such people, much less become "friends" with them.

I find that with a few exceptions that their moral and ethical foundations are contrary to mine. We do not have the same values. I find that I have little in common with them otherwise in terms of interests or hobbies.

Is this a failing on my part? Should I not embrace all people? It's tough. It means I am not "tolerant" of other people's beliefs.

It reminds me that "tolerance" in our current society means that you have no principles, morals, ethics, or values that you hold important, so pretty much anything and everything is a-okay. I'm not tolerant in that context. At all.

No, tolerance means not requiring others to have the same ones you do.

I agree with this 100%. Tolerance to me is the idea that if you wish to know the other side of an argument, you can find out and think about it, at the end of a friend not at the end of a barrel. Tolerance to me is that I can go out and talk to someone about my crackpot ideals, but they can also talk to me about their crackpot ideals, but on both sides, we are listening (a critical thing missing on both sides of the aisle today) and not trying to interrupt the other, no matter how much it makes your blood boil.

    A popular thing:
Replublicans debate by yelling over the other person, interrupting them.
Democrats debate by calling the opponent irrational, illogical while they tend to make arguements appealing to pathos or incorrect information.

Strange world. I am a lib, to a moderate degree, but I have many conservative friends. Why? I dont LIVE politics, nor do I force mine upon them. I want friends in my life, not political opponents. Too many believe it is their charge in life to "teach everyone who doesnt believe in this ideal or another a lesson, make them learn" attitude that doesnt make friends but constantly spreads enemies. People who have ever had a political conversation with me will remark that I listen and appeal to logic, but I dont try to convert them. I ask them questions and submit my views (but not attack theirs in the process) but my goal isnt to spread my views, it is to learn of other's ideals and potentially modify mine by appealing to logic within. THAT is tolerance.

Things you have learned from your liberal friends? No. It doesnt sound like anything a friend of mine would post out of anger for having someone disagree with them.
