I'm gonna wait this one out I think. This is the ONLY prof teaching this class, which is a Major Requirement (Entrepreneurship in the Kelley School of Business, so he probably thought he was safe saying that stuff :) ).

Figure I'll let him know how I feel after final grades are in, and I make sure I don't have to have him again :) This is far too large an investment from me (I pay out of state tuition still...) to get a worse grade just because some prof is a douche.

JMO, your smart to wait until your done with the class.

While specifics are still fresh in your mind, document it. Copy/paste your original post into an email to yourself or something.

Yup, already got it into a word doc along with the notes on it I wrote down in class :yesway: (damn bad memory :D ) Emailed it to myself and saved :yesway:

Man, if a student or teacher ever made a comment like that in the Criminology department (my major) at ISU..... lets just say my fellow classmates and I are on the conservative side of the political spectrum. Funny thing about this incident is I had a Professor use his class time to bash Obama and the Clintons frequently in class. Its nice to not always be stuck in a liberal hell hole during the day....:patriot:

well if you havent noticed by now your professor is a libby, and the only way for people to actually listen to his (cause no one out side of the teaching world wants to) bs is to have you come into class like normal and then once your in and think your actually going to start class he blindsides you cause he knows you dont care an you paid for the class so he knows you wont get up and leave(just like everyone else). he is lonely and knows he can only fight with words, which isnt saying alot cause they all sound like idoits hell listen to obama REPEAT REPEAT!!!!! the oath... its just too far from their capability to sound smart, even a news reporter had to correct him when it came to obamas own faith!!!

Actually, according to the re-cap he gave in class, the Chief justice said the oath wrong, and Obama said it right :n00b:

You aren't going to have much luck, more than likely, whether you discuss it with the individual or go up the food chain. When my daughter was attending there she had a debate class and was to write a rebuttal to the con side of an argument. She was free to pick the topic. She choose gun control and the Second Amendment. Her prof told her that he was flunking her because of her "take" on the subject and that if she had done a pro-gun control argument she would have had an A. She argued with him, went over his head a few levels and was slapped down at every turn. Her father and I got involved because, after all it was our money paying for this education, and we got no where either. Very very sad.

It sounds like you have a pitiful teacher. I really can't judge him because I don't know him but any respectable teacher would be grateful when others express differing opinions. When any of my students can articulate a dissenting viewpoint it is one of the best catalyst for learning. Most "lefty" enthusiasts that I know are (too) open minded. So I'm surprised whenever I hear of closed minded liberals, usually clueless but not closed minded. Maybe he was being silly to assume everyone in his class thinks the same as he does. I wouldn't be able to wait until the end of the semester to question his pretentious remarks but I know how important it is to chose your battles. Best of luck. It would great if it was easier to delight in others foolishness..easier for sure if they were not the ones grading me.

Annie, those were my same sentiments when I was reading this thread. My twelve year old son's college tuition is paid for already for when he gets there. If this occurs during his "education", hopefully he is majoring in a subject that he can go to another institution to study and take our money with him. I think that is the only thing that hurts a college or university anymore - withdrawing tuition fees from underneath them.

this is why you always bring a camcorder or digital-cam, just in case.

You should ask him if he can go a whole week without eating something grown by a "redneck".

I ended in a very similar area.

I'm actually from North Carolina, Charlotte actually. So... Nate, man, if your professor thinks NC is all red as hell, he's severely wrong. Senior year of high school I had to do an end of year/high school paper and presentation. Complete with graphs and everything. Bear in mind, this was in '04, I decided to pick something controversial. I did mandatory military service, stating how it would be beneficial for America.

I'm a damned good public speaker. I actually was the Debate team's president for two years, and I still hold the record for most wins within a 3 year timespan at my school (I would have it for 4, except that the program started my sophomore year). But when I gave my speech to the teachers, they took their notes--disapprovingly. One of them, upon hearing my topic, audibly sighed and shook her head. I brought everything out, I discussed it with them during their question and answer portion (which was nothing more than, 'Why do you think this is good for us?' and 'Don't you think that would only mean more children would die?') and ended up with a C for my presentation (if you get any lower than that, you practically fail the whole thing).

Charlotte is blue as hell. My dad and step-mom both voted blue ever since I can remember, too. So... your professor is stupid and wrong.

Other than that, there's not much to be said, if you know you're gonna lose. Don't try until you've got nothing to lose. But you already know that, so no biggie.

this is a business professor trying to force socialism down your throat?

at a minimum, that is educational malpractice .... or something like that.

guess we know why he is teaching instead of doing

    Nate,

NC is full of rednecks? Ummm.... He does know that he is in Indiana, right? Bloomington people seem to forget that until they drive through Martinsville and roll up their windows for fear of a flat tire and dueling banjo music. ;)

Personally, he needs to teach a class in Bedford or Jasper to re-adjust his baseline of Indiana standards.

Well, except for when they drive in Indy and slowly roll up the windows and pretend that they are not doing it out of fear of the very groups that they outwardly idolize , but really internally fear.

In any event, go and watch the business school scene with Rodney dangerfield a few hundred times and maybe you will feel better.

Sounds like you've made up your mind, but my recommendation is to fight this. If guys like you won't say anything about teachers like him, I don't know how we'll ever quiet them. Honestly you probably wouldn't get anywhere and he'd probably hit back when he gives you your grade. It would take a lot of time and you probably wouldn't win. But, even imagine there is a sympathetic administrator (which there actually might be in Kelley), he would need documentation from student complaints before he could take any action.

Since it's costing you so much $$$ I understand if you don't want to, but from the perspective of someone on the inside I hope that students like you are willing to take the hits to expose some of this. I'd be happy to help you go to bat, too.

    NateIU10,

I would certainly put this on the teacher evaluations at the end of the semester. Profs do care if they get low marks and negative comments.

Might think about contacting the Office of Tolerance and Diversity, or whatever they call their poltical correctness police at IU. Now, naturally, they are going to be a bunch of liberals and will certainly sympathize with the professor's views. However, it is not a bad idea just to get on their radar. The guy was attacking you with negative stereotypes, and "redneck" is related to your race. They may just blow you off and say, "White male conservatives have to take the crap. We're only here to protect minorities, women, and liberals." At least you can make them confront their own hypocrisy. Ask for their reply or policies in writing.

I make a sincere effort to not oppress students in my classes with my political beliefs. It's inappropriate, even if it's a class on political science. I am enraged by incidents like Nate describes, and more so because a vast majority of such attempts at indoctrination are from the same side (pseudo-liberal socialist-statists). My disdain for those who engage in such behavior is why I avoid it.

As far as what to do . . .

If you want any kind of results, the longer you wait, the less chance anything will happen. Those who suggested the potential for retaliation are right on the money, and given the socio-political bent of the offender, it's likely to happen. They tend to be bitter, spiteful, vindictive people, especially behind your back.

It's easy for me to say since I have nothing to lose in this situation, but I'd write a letter to the administration now.
